The executives sold out and drove the company into the ground. During the Series D a few years ago they all cashed out their equity, making over 1M each. Leaving regular employees holding worthless equity as it recently sold itself in a fire sale to a competitor but trying to play it as a merger. This is one of the worst job markets in a decade and a lot of people are about to realize they are completely screwed
