Pros

Good people if you know where to look.

Cons

Diamond has recently announced a policy that trans people can't use the toilets matching their gender (and in fact claim this has been the rule all along). Despite pushback and comparison with other workplace's policies, senior management has actively defended this policy. The EDI working groups have been completely sidelined, feedback has been ignored. You do not recruit underrepresented groups by discriminating against them in the workplace. (This policy applies to visitors too, so good to know if you have beamtime coming up!). I've never heard the executive board actually address any employee concerns satisfactorily, but obviously this one is particularly bad. If you are trans, NB, gender non-conforming, LGBTQ+, or like me simply find this morally abhorrent, I would stay away.

Pros

Many kind and dedicated coworkers Possibility of working on cutting edge science Interacting with academics from around the world on exciting science challenges

Cons

Too many layers of management and too little agency devolved through them Inconsistency in funding new projects - no transparency Repeated insistence on rebuilding wheels in house when solutions exist commercially Management not giving the impression that experimental support, the facility's actual raison d'etre, is a funding priority

Pros

There is the opportunity to work with brilliant people from many different backgrounds and with many different areas of expertise, all of whom are hugely enthusiastic about their work. There are many interesting challenges to work and a fair degree of freedom to work on different things. There is opportunity for public engagement, plenty of training opportunities and great facilities for scientific research.

Cons

There is a lack of leadership from management at all levels due to the frustrations between different goals within the company - are we primarily a service for users or a scientific research establishment? As a result management decisions are not always clear or well communicated.
