Cool product but Sales verticals were a cruel experiment - Account Executive DroneDeploy Employee Review

Pros

Cool, sellable product. Sales motions around inbound and outbound pretty established. Good SE team support for the AE’s. Competitors are somewhat behind.

Cons

Sales verticals mean that your ability to sell is governed by the industry you’re given. Construction is not the same as Energy is not the same as Agriculture etc. Get a bad vertical with little to no enterprise interest? Yeah you’re screwed. I’m hoping that they eliminated or at least somehow rebalanced this since I left. It was a brutal, painful experience having your job, livelihood, career, and reputation thrown into an experiment and when it didn’t work as intended, to be laid off or driven away. A lot of us paid the price for this not working well.

Pros

- Great engineering culture: thoughtful decision-making, room to grow + internal promotions, engineers feels like they're on the same team, leadership actually cares about what engineers think. - Compelling technology: robots flying in the sky and walking around is really cool - Competitive compensation package: recruiters usually cannot match my base

Cons

- Leadership is sometimes a bit overly optimistic/ambitious when setting goals. Fortunately, there is NOT a culture of engineers working overtime on nights + weekends to make up for this; they just change scope or resources or deadlines. - Engineering feels understaffed. This may be a symptom of the above ambition. But I think it's also because the company has a lot of technical surface area. Every 4 weeks when it's my turn to be the support on-call engineer, it's a full-time job.
