Deceptive Role and Toxic, Elitist Culture - Staff Attorney Edelson Employee Review

Pros

The benefits are the best thing about the whole place.

Cons

I would strongly advise any bright, motivated young lawyer to think twice before joining this firm. The “Staff Attorney” role is deeply misleading; it is not an attorney position in any meaningful sense. You are essentially a customer service agent, micromanaged at every step. Even routine emails require pre-approved language from the “real attorneys.” The pay is low, especially given the expectation of near-constant availability. The firm loudly claims to be progressive and “for the people,” but in practice, it is one of the most elitist environments I have encountered. Unless you went to a top-five law school, you will never be treated as a full attorney. Management of staff attorneys is equally disappointing. They promise autonomy and client management experience, but you quickly realize that independence is discouraged. The firm also remains overwhelmingly white and has made no visible effort to improve diversity or inclusion. The treatment of their only non-white employee on the mass torts team was disgraceful and emblematic of the culture. If you are seeking real litigation experience such as writing, research, strategy, or courtroom exposure, this is not the place. You will not be developing as a lawyer; you will be answering client questions with prewritten scripts. To make matters worse, management feedback was laced with microaggressions, and when I left, not one of those same managers acknowledged my departure. The lack of professionalism and empathy says it all. In short, if you are a thoughtful, ambitious new lawyer who wants to grow and be respected, look elsewhere.

Pros

Incredible opportunities for young lawyers and paralegals. You are given a lot of responsibility on meaningful cases. Great culture -- people genuinely love working together.

Cons

The hours and pace can be demanding, but it's what you would expect for a law firm working on such high-stakes cases, and the challenge is worth it.

Pros

The employees at Edelson PC are some of the most intelligent people I have ever met in my life. They use their full force to fight for real justice and the country benefits constantly. Anyone employed there is genuinely lucky to get to work on these cases. The credit has to go to the CEO and Partners for establishing themselves so well that they can afford to work on these cases full time and not just in rare pro-bono scenarios. The pay and benefits are incredible. If you are someone who can take on a lot of independent responsibility, can problem solve well on your own, can handle longer hours, and can speak up for yourself, working at Edelson is an opportunity you should not turn down. Just be sure to cross your Ts and dot your Is, there is no room for forgiveness at this firm.

Cons

Some people in leadership can be toxic and manipulative, heavy on the gaslighting, while others aren't. Often, it stems from insecurity and stress. One will always cover their own a** before they protect you. They have a huge culture around this concept of a "lateral hierarchy" and being yourself, but that often means they don't set expectations and will fire you immediately if you don't meet the expectations you weren't told about. It's harder for the younger, less experienced employees than those who know how firms can be. Some managers are excellent teachers while others will set you up to fail over and over. It really does depend on who you work with.
