Pros

It's remarkable to say I enjoy working with everyone on the team here, but I do. We genuinely care about each other and the quality of the work we do and the service we provide, which is a refreshing change. There is a nice range of diverse strengths, talents and abilities that everyone brings together, which allows us to be more synergistic. I've also been impressed by how hard everyone works but that we still have fun together. The company has been around for over 38 years and has changed a lot over that time but I feel like it's finally starting to realize how much potential is has, and it's exciting to be a part of it.

Cons

We need to take better advantage of all we have to offer and the amazing clients we have served over the years. Fortunately, we are starting to do that now.

Pros

EI is one of the better-kept secrets in the realm of organizational behavior, emotional intelligence, team management, and consulting. They combine their rich history (spanning 39 years) with a start-up like orientation to challenges. I joined here at a time of leadership transition—which can be trying for an organization. Yet, every single member of the team exuded enthusiasm, and extended to me a large measure of trust and autonomy when I started. It's impressive the global impact The Institute is makes, given how small the team is. It has truly been thrilling to observe how well-balanced the team's behavior styles are, to experience the flexibility we are allotted in wearing multiple hats, and to be surrounded by such warm (and passionate) personalities. It's located in a peaceful office park east of Home Depot, Trader Joes (my go-to lunch spot), and REI. I commute from Greenlake, Seattle, but comparatively, the commute is pretty good. (Wish I didn't have to pay the 520 bridge toll though!) The office space itself embodies some of the same warmth I see in my coworkers. It's a small family with a larger community which reaches across numerous industires. Our clients do a wide range of work, so it's always interesting; goodness does EI have some passionate and dedicated clients. Effectiveness Institute shows that there is plenty of room for growth, personal and organizational. I come to the Institute every day excited by what I get to work on. There is no nightly dread, as has been the experience at other places. I love that coworkers want to talk about personality differences, big ideas, and other questions relevant to the emotional life. It's refreshing to be involved in an organization dedicated to making businesses better by focusing on people. People skills are "hard" skills. The president is experienced, humble, discerning, and has the right vision for the organization. He's focused on growing out key functions, particuarly digital and marketing capabilities, that have been neglected (or left untapped) in the past. I anticipate we'll grow a few more internal positions in the upcoming year (plus many more external trainers and independent contractors). The Institute is in a fantastic position, somehow, an even better one than several months ago.

Cons

I've grown accustomed to casual attire the past few years, so business casual attire in the office is a mild discomfort, but bearable. I'd welcome slightly perkier benefits, in some areas; otherwise, they're pretty comparable. Having a smaller team has many benefits, but a few more onsite staff would liven up the office energy bit. Then again, as an introvert, the office strikes a pleasant balance. You're not stacked on top of your coworkers in one of those trending "open workspace" faux-cubicle floor plans. The Institute had been living beneath its potential for a season. Thankfully, its back on track. Effectiveness Institute is really hitting its stride.
