This employee was hired specifically for a client's project with an estimated completion time of 3-6 months. After consulting with our team, we believed the project could be completed within six months. However, after five months, we did not have a working product for the client to test, leading to the client’s decision to halt payments until they saw a working app.
To expedite the process, I added two more team members to assist him as the initial two months saw little progress on the UI design. Other team members could have completed the UI implementation in about two weeks, which prompted this decision.
Despite our overall cash flow challenges due to external funding delays, this project was fully funded. Problems arose when we exceeded the budget and schedule, leading to the client stopping payments. This delay in payment to the employee was partly due to these circumstances.
My assessment of this developer is that he is hardworking and dedicated but not as competent as some other team members. This became apparent when it took him two months to implement a 15-20 page UI, a task typically completed much faster by other team members.
While his claims about delayed payments are true, these were influenced by project delays. After 10 months, the project was still incomplete, and the client had stopped making payments long before. This situation led to payment delays to the employee.
In hindsight, although our original estimates to the client might have been too low, this employee should have been let go within three months given how long it took him to get going. Some of the prior work experience he listed on his resume appears to be work he did at another company's training program but was made to look like full-time paid employment. This experience has taught us valuable lessons, and we are committed to improving our project estimations, recruiting processes, and management going forward.
