Cons

I joined GreenShield with sincere enthusiasm 10 years ago, attracted by the organization's dedicated commitment to "Better Health For All." Unfortunately, my experience has been marked by profound disappointment, as it quickly became evident that the organization faces substantial internal challenges, primarily stemming from a lack of integrity within the leadership team. The decision-making processes within the organization appear disproportionately influenced by an external consultancy group named STEM, notably owned by the CEO's former superior. This reliance on external guidance raises valid concerns about the leadership's autonomy and critical thinking capabilities, as decisions seem to be delegated to STEM rather than being internally generated. GreenShield is presently undergoing a significant transformation, yet this journey is marred by pervasive political dynamics and unrealistic timelines across the organization. Despite the external accolades (which have have been bought or doctored) bestowed upon the organization, a closer examination reveals a facade, with an internal culture seemingly endorsing and rewarding bullying behavior. This incongruity prompts questions about the credibility of the accolades, necessitating an external audit to scrutinize the veracity of Green Shield's purported achievements. Regrettably, a palpable sense of dissent permeates various departments, including IT, Product Development, Marketing (+GreenShield Cares), Sales, and HR. Notably, the only functional area displaying a semblance of coherence is Strategy, while the rest of the organization appears entangled in a disconcerting state of disarray. The prevailing atmosphere within GreenShield undermines its declared commitment to better health, warranting a comprehensive evaluation of the organization's practices. Furthermore, it is deeply disturbing to note instances of inherent bullying and discriminatory practices based on race or religion in some functions. Such behaviors have resulted in individuals being marginalized to the extent that they have been compelled to take mental health leave. This issue demands urgent attention and intervention to cultivate a more inclusive and supportive organizational culture. There are also instances where these the organization exhibit a disregard for regulations and legal recommendations, fostering a perception that they consider themselves above the law. An additional concern centers around the marked income disparity observed among individuals in comparable roles within the organization. This incongruity necessitates a thorough examination of the fairness and equity in the compensation structure, with potential repercussions for overall morale and team cohesion. For those who thrive in an environment characterized by dynamism and a less rigid structure, reminiscent of the "wild wild west," this organization may align with their preferences. However, it is imperative to carefully weigh the implications for organizational dynamics and employee relations. Caution is advised, especially for individuals prioritizing mental peace and personal well-being, as this organization, located on Yonge Street, is only "Better HELL for All."

GreenShield Response

Thank you for sharing your feedback and for your contributions to GreenShield over the past several years. We’re pleased to hear the hybrid work model has been a positive part of your experience, and we remain committed to offering flexibility that supports both our employees and the needs of our business. As GreenShield continues to grow, the pace and complexity of work have increased across many areas. This is a deliberate part of scaling the organization and delivering on our commitments. We actively manage this through prioritization, team-level planning and ongoing support. We also want to provide important context on several of the points raised. GreenShield regularly benchmarks compensation against the market and individual performance to ensure it remains competitive. Our total rewards approach extends beyond base salary and includes development investment, benefits and recognition programs. On recognition, we do not align with the view that recognition is absent. In addition to formal programs like Applause, which enables real-time peer recognition and rewards, leaders are expected to actively acknowledge contributions and support their teams. These expectations are clear and embedded within our leadership accountabilities. Similarly, opportunities for growth and development are a core part of the employee experience. Employees have access to structured development planning, leadership programs and an annual $2,000 learning allowance, supported by regular check-ins to support career progression. Suggesting there are limited or no opportunities for growth does not reflect the range of development pathways available across the organization. While individual perspectives on workload, compensation and growth may vary, many employees continue to build long-term careers and take on new opportunities at GreenShield as the organization evolves. We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective.
