Pros

-Some flexibility with work schedules -Can have fun on the job -PTO and benefits are fine; includes someeducational reimbursement -Branches are small enough that you can get to know everyone and feel like a team -Most patrons are fine; some are extra nice and make you feel good to do your job

Cons

-Non-competitive pay for hourly -Not much diversity in most branches -Dealing with patrons can sometimes be complicated so you just have to be patient; management is generally pretty supportive though -Some cities have a more noticeable unhoused population and the library system only has off-duty police officers rather than social workers to manage the issue -Upper admin tends to stay for decades--hard to break into those positions -No opportunity for advancement -Management ignores staff critiques of poor supervisors

Pros

Worked as a library aide, essentially was responsible for restocking books throughout my entire shift (4-6 hours), occasionally did other jobs as needed. Overall, the atmosphere is pretty relaxed. There's more pressure to achieve accuracy than speed, and before business hours you can listen to music as you shelve. No dress code, no drug tests, 15 minute breaks per 4-hour shift.

Cons

Management can be unavailable at times, but mostly are attentive to employees' and patrons' concerns. The library can attract some odd characters, and you might see a guy pleasuring himself on the public computers or what have you. Luckily, you're under no obligation to deal with these people — all concerns are to be directed to the reference desk or management.
