Pros

- fair pay for a student job - 40% discount on shoes - customers are basically always lovely

Cons

- Accent Group has massively narrow-minded sales culture, only ever valuing sales - area managers constantly scrutinising why KPIs not met and were never reasonable about the time it takes to do other necessary tasks (clean store, booking in stock, etc) - they literally only value you if you can make your budget every single shift, constantly watch you and pressure you if you don't make budget even twice in a week - upper management believes that store traffic should somewhat equate to sales made, disappointed when not - always pressure you to chat to your customer about unrelated things before trying to help the customer find shoes, even if the customer knows what they want and aren't chatty - hired kids who just got out of high school, had no sense of responsibility, literally could only sell shoes and did not know how to do anything else, always disrespected and complained about managers (I know the managers were not great but there was little to no respect for them from the beginning - work needs to be done whether or not the manager is good) - managers constantly changing - managers and area managers were not good with people; condescending, passive-aggressive, never relaxed, genuine or open about the business - literally cut your hours the following week if you had bad sales one week, impossible to get hour guarantees if you work in quiet store with less sales - some managers forced the attitude that their store was a big friendship group, did not prioritise or value a professional work environment, made staff uncomfortable by trying to force a fun energy - area managers never valued or asked for staff feedback on new managers, waited for things to get really bad before doing something about bad managers (which doesnt even happen sometimes because employees often think its too dramatic to make a complaint) - racist toward customers who are not fluent in English, managers never once called out this behaviour, one former manager was an instigator of racist and passive-agressive action and speech toward tourists - no actual HR department since Accent Group - no training for any banking, till, refunds etc. only learn on the job, meaning lots of mistakes

Pros

Good casual job to have alongside studying or other commitments. Met some really great people along the way, if you filter out the toxic personalities the place can sometimes attract. Casual shifts= work/life balance. However this was often taken advantage of with shifts consistently needing covers. Being 'unavailable' more than handful of times, got you in the bad books! Decent staff discounts with bonuses if you ever made a sales target. Casual pay was good, not so much for full-time.

Cons

Super high turnaround of staff & managers- I was a casual for 5 years and had a total of 7 managers at the one store. The higher management would provide unreasonable sales targets that you really had to bend over backwards to even get close to. This resulted in a competitive nature between team mates and feelings of shame/disappointment if targets were not met. Outdated sales tactics for this day and age- consumption habits are changing as a result of the climate crisis, and Hype/ Accent group does not address this in the slightest. Hassling customers to buy socks and waterproofing they don't even need isn't going to work forever! Consistently understaffed!!
