Pros
There are some really passionate, incredibly motivated and talented people that work at IMA. I was constantly impressed by the ideas and dedication exhibited by some of my colleagues there. Because the agency is wildly understaffed, you can take initiative and get experience in areas that would be off limits to you anywhere else. The trial-by-fire culture that exists within the agency makes sure that you will learn a lot in a little time.
Cons
Extremely hierarchal. ALL decisions are made by a clearly dysfunctional and inexperienced executive team. Constant in-fighting within agency leadership that trickles down to lower level employees. Makes for an extremely awkward working environment. Lower level and mid-level employees are often burdened with unreasonable work expectations due to extremely poor management (or complete lack thereof) from often incompetent executive leadership team. Those who run the agency seem to be there simply from having stuck with the agency for a couple of years, not having to prove themselves anywhere else; nor having the experience to go anywhere else. Nobody here - in a leadership position - understands basic project/contracts management. They are still stuck in an old buddy-buddy mentality that the development world moved away from 20 years ago. The pay is also a joke - I was paid 40% below my market value with the hopes of getting a salary realignment. The benefits no longer make up for this substantial gap. It is no surprise that turnover in agency staff is off the charts and will continue to be.
