Pros

Beautiful settings, and free golf access. Individual clubs have a small business feel, but operate with the safety net of corporate support for payroll, IT, strategic planning and cost controls.

Cons

In the tightening economy of the last several years, more attention to profit means less emphasis on hiring and training quality staff. In the service industry, employees are the product.

Pros

Strong work-life balance compared to public accounting. Leadership is supportive and approachable. The work is meaningful and provides exposure to ASC 740, multi-entity tax provision work, and corporate tax compliance. Employees are generally encouraged to collaborate and help each other succeed.

Cons

Compensation growth may lag behind opportunities available in some areas of public accounting. Advancement opportunities can be limited due to a relatively lean tax department structure. Some processes remain heavily dependent on spreadsheets and manual workflows, which can create inefficiencies during busy periods.
