Pros

The company mission is "To be the best place in the world for developers to work." The whole company is 100% remote all over the USA, there is no office. You get paid overtime if it's approved, it's +10% for 41-50 hours and +20% for anything over 50. If it's not approved you just work your 40. PTO can run negative up to -40 hours but special exceptions can be made and you can take more, you just owe it back if you leave so when you start you can still take your vacations without any accrued pto. Yearly meet and greet (optional) where JBS fly's everyone to the same location for a get together (all expenses paid). Locations like Atlanta, Las Vegas, etc, it changes every year. All JBS communications is done on Slack or Office 365 email. There are many channels in slack for all kinds of things. There's a lot of cross team passion channels for things like PC Building, Gaming, even Elden Ring has it's own channel. The exception being that the client whose project you are on might require you to be on w/e they use too which might also be slack, or Microsoft Teams, or just straight email, zoom, etc. So you kind of wear two hats for communication "The Jbs Side" and the "Client side". My team huddles often when needed, and we've even done peer pairing remotely over vs code live share in rare occasions, the technology to be "remote" is WAY better here in 2023 so it works better than it did back in say 2016 so treat old reviews lightly in my opinion. I didn't even know the stack I was being hired for, but JBS hired me anyways and let me jump in, 18 months later the project is near launch and I've become an expert at said stack. This effort was aided largely by my ability to huddle with other devs, ask questions, and be part of a team, we learned together. We even set up "tech talks" so we could show the team ideas, proofs of concepts, brown bags, etc. Every team is different though, but that's some amazing diversity. If you don't jive well with your team or are tired of the project, you can request to be moved to a different project, it might not be immediate but they will try hard to make it happen. There are routinely "swarm projects" smaller projects for clients where there might not be full time direct hires for them so developers can wrack overtime by swarming on them as side projects. A coworker hosts JBS Game night every Thursday (usually) where people join on Discord and they play online board games together. There's employees working on setting up Minecraft servers and giving access to them to other JBS Employees. The company is constantly growing and developing a pretty fun and diverse work culture. We even have a channel dedicated to "look what I got Chat GPT to do". You might not want to work anywhere else and will use JBS as the bar of what a good job is. I have received over 100 job offers since I started at JBS and I've not been interested in any of them. And only 3 of them could compete with JBS's compensation but of those 3 non were 100% remote. I left a good stable job to take the offer I got to work for JBS, a huge risk, and I don't regret it for a second.

Cons

There's no office, you can never go into the office, there isn't one so if that's a thing you need you might struggle at JBS. You will be spending a lot of time at home. Optionally consider wework, shared office space rentals, coffee houses, etc. Remote work is awesome like that, it's up to you to make it a success, be creative. Only a con if you care: It's BYOD (Bring your own device) the company does not provide you with equipment of any kind. (A lot of us build our own pcs, purchase framework laptops, or other laptops, or are just straight Apple users etc etc). JBS is fully in the cloud, cloud based email, cloud based communications etc. Personally I love that it's BYOD, my stuff is better than anything any employer would give me and I like that I own it and can make it mine and choose all my own hardware. However, in some cases on some projects a client will require JBS Developers to use their secure/managed laptops etc and they will send the JBS Developer a machine and it'll be managed by the client. Health insurance is kind of expensive as soon as you add a spouse/child but it's basically free if you only get it for yourself. But any job I've had before JBS had even worse health insurance... The insurance is good though, BCBS!
