Management does not follow values or address community needs - Information Technology Specialist Jefferson County Public Library Employee Review

Pros

Many of the people "on the ground" providing direct services to patrons are doing a great job, as are several support units in the system Substantial budget and many library locations. Colorado is a great place to live. Competitive pay for the position I held. Moderate flexibility. Good benefits for a library system. The values and mission of the library are spot-on, however public services leadership doesn't actually live up to them.

Cons

Exceptionally risk-adverse, top-down, homogeneous management. Most employees are afforded little autonomy and discouraged from asking questions, learning from external perspectives, forming bonds with one another or even collaborating or sharing ideas. Woefully inadequate systems for information and project management that date back to the early 2000's. The organization seems primarily invested in keeping a small group of narrow-minded elders in power, at the cost of providing innovative services or programming, truly helping in-need populations and otherwise fulfilling the role of a modern public library.

Pros

Nice colleagues, better than being unemployed while you look for a better position elsewhere.

Cons

- Dead end job without meaningful opportunities for advancement, relevant training, or raises. - Even with recent unionization, wages for many long term employees are less than $20/hr with no realistic path forward to a living wage for this area. This is for college degreed employees. - Massive administrative bloat and waste - Expects employees to be constant social workers for patrons while employees are paid little and many have no benefits, so they, themselves, need social worker support. - As an org it is more concerned with LOOKING good than BEING good. Not trustworthy.
