Is this your company?

Pros

Sure, great fellow employees, but they keep leaving. Sure, interesting subject matter, but there isn’t time to read any articles. Sure, the work is remote, but only because their reputation is shot and nobody local wants to work for them. Sure, it is an “editorial” job, but is it really, or will it be for long?

Cons

Might be a phenomenal company to work for if you’re in India, but if you’re considering joining the US team, don’t bother. Your time will be consumed finding workarounds for the constant problems that arise, technological or otherwise, and how you can best transfer the workload to offshore teams. You will be used: underpaid, overworked, and will not be appreciated. The largest, mostly self-inflicted, problems here revolve around the company’s merger with a competitor’s subsidiary and the adoption of their online editing platform last year. The editing platform should still be in Beta testing, as one glitch after the next is identified by not only employees, but clients and the authors of journal articles as well. You will spend your time apologizing to authors and clients for these frequent technical problems that should have been cleared up before the platform was ever launched. An increased reliance on overseas teams means that if you are one of the few members of the US editorial staff left, you will literally be training your replacements. This has left a very disillusioned workforce, who are witness to coworkers leaving weekly, never to be replaced stateside. In the end your “editorial” job becomes nothing more than pushing paper between authors, clients, and the offshore teams. You will become the face for clients and authors to deal with, while the majority of the work is done overseas by even more underpaid/overworked staff. Eventually, the poor quality work that comes out of this arrangement is going to come back to haunt the company, but if it can be done cheaper right now, the people running the show don’t care. The company doesn’t even try to hide the fact that their primary focus is on cost cutting, using all profits to buy up competitors, instead of appreciating their staff in ways that truly matter. Raises offered each year are inadequate and cheap, the 401k match is anemic (one of the worst you will see in corporate America), benefit deductibles go up significantly each year, and time off benefits themselves were even cut this past year. Make sure to visit the Glassdoor reviews for the Sheridan Group and CJK, because these are all part of the same company.
