Pros

Dedicated group of attorneys, investigators, paralegals and LSA's. Salary is decent.

Cons

Caseload is too high to provide quality service to clients. Investigators clearing 100 to 150 cases a year, while investigators in the CLU have a case load of 5 to 15 a year. TOTAL MISMANAGEMENT. Current Public Defender has never worked in a government organization and has no clue on how to manage a government department. When the organization runs out of pens and paper, there is a huge problem. He refuses to hire investigators as investigators are retiring or resigning. My section went from 14 investigators down to 3, with no drop in caseload. I know one attorney that tried 100 felony cases in a calendar year!

Pros

The program provides lots of hands-on experience to manage your own cases from arraignment to the end of trial. The weekly workshops are a great way to get feedback and learn new skills. Supervising attorneys are very supportive and provide a wealth of knowledge. Most post-bars/interns have their own office/workspace.

Cons

The post-bar program does not pay or provide a stipend. Riverside County is large and not all post-bar law clerks work in the Riverside Office. May have to travel long distance for the weekly workshops.
