Pros

Learning Bee is a unique after school program that strives for enrichment beyond academics. As a staff member, there is a lot of room for creativity and idea sharing. If you have an idea for a project or event, you are welcome to take the lead and do it. This program is a good alternative to worksheet-based, solely academic after school programs in Fremont and the area. There is a major emphasis on the arts and other life-skills to shape well-rounded kids. The director is very passionate director about this business, the kids, parents, and staff that work there.

Cons

Pay: The job appears to pay very well for especially for teachers, however you are paid as "self-employed", not on a W-2 so no taxes are taken out of your paycheck and you must pay a lump sum during tax season. There is no formal explanation of this and young high school assistants and up are typically very confused. Doesn't seem legal to be treated as self-employed and not have the employer pay employee taxes on you, many IRS tax folks I've talked to don't think it is either. Certain employees, however, do receive W2s for whatever reason. Payroll is not very professional- timesheets are handwritten, looks like pay is calculated in Excel, and checks are personal handwritten checks. There have been many times where I was underpaid on paychecks for no apparent reason.
