Pros

Interesting local clients and diverse projects. Connections to talented people. Somewhat flexible about remote work. Small company (~15 employees). Pet-friendly. Company well-respected for 30 years in the area. Fun sometimes.

Cons

You must be a self-starter with good communication skills to work here or you'll get walked all over. The favoritism from management and talking behind peoples backs in such a small company gets old pretty fast. "Business-savvy" CEO manipulates employees and uses scare tactics to get things her way (especially with older employees). Majority of employees are visibly unhappy and unfulfilled, as management does not invest in professional development or improving a negative company culture of "overworked and underpaid." The company does not invest in employees via more competitive salaries, higher salaries for long-term employees (is not known to exceed mid $50k), over-time bonuses, sending team members to conferences, etc. Instead of training someone internally or offering overtime, the company often hires contractors to complete tasks and pays them 3x or more what FT employees make. They also blame employees' lack of skill development on time management, saying an employee can do individual research to be self-taught, plus attend all meetings and get work done in 40 hours. If not, they encourage trainings to be completed outside of the 40 hours. There is no work-life balance. The company could also better streamline products/apps/services for consistent, updated standards for all employees to use. This is one of many onboarding issues for new employees, as there is no internal Human Resources. Employees are often shushed or publically reprimanded after giving opinions in team meetings. They have also been used as public examples of mistakes and forced to tell their own story of failure. It makes it very uncomfortable. Projects never get done on time (or too tight to the deadline, causing work outside of regular 9-5 hours), because the CEO is overly involved in all retainer clients or clients she sees growing into one. She doesn't have enough time to review work or emails, but must be the final say before sending project drafts/finals to clients. CEO also often comes up with the concepts, so there's not much room to be creative in campaigns. Employees are basically overworked machines cranking out sub-par work quickly. CEO shushes employees when they try to speak up during client meetings (in person and on the phone), however, employees are expected to manage clients on their own and know exactly what is going on the rest of the time. It leads to clients not respecting employees, and only wanting to hear from CEO. Consistently a fight with management about long-term goals (for example, they ask "What do you want to do?" but nothing changes because business needs aren't met and they're understaffed). CEO has a way of looking at you that makes you feel small and useless. She loves to make employees cry. Management will call/email/text during nights and weekends. Found myself on computer 12+ hours per day. CEO can't even get employee names right most of the time. Probably because there is so much turnover.

Thank you for taking the time to review Miranda Creative. These reviews, especially the passion expressed here, are monitored, taken to heart and applied to our changes/growth. We have shared these comments with the Human Resources team, and the employee-based teams that working on project tracking, software, and workflow management in an effort to better address the impact changes in media has had on our entire industry. In 2018, Miranda Creative is celebrating a 30-year milestone, and we have only achieved this through the talent and generosity of our team. We would not be an employer of such longevity if this review was reflective of our entire culture. However, we do take such feelings very seriously. If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the agency principal at mmiranda@mirandacreative.com. Thank you.

Pros

This agency is dedicated to its community - not just in it for the dollar - a community of employees and clients. I joined to support the team remotely and felt as though I'd always been there (even via Zoom) in a very short time. With over ten years of various agency experiences, it's refreshing to see an owner who goes above and beyond for her employees while tending to client relationships. New spirits are encouraged to shine, and those who've been in the industry for a while are challenged to go outside of their comfort zones. Growing families, life's unexpected happenings, and even National Grilled Cheese Day show how much understanding and support for work/life balance resides at 18 Elm Street. This is not an agency run by fear; it's run by communication with care.

Cons

Agency life - in general - is not meant for everyone. You need to be able to juggle different clients in different industries working towards very different goals, sometimes in the span of an hour. Clients can be demanding, and fires pop up, but when it's truly a team effort, as it is at Miranda Creative, it becomes less of an issue. She worries about overall reputation, NOT her own ego. Sure, the owner can be a little quirky, but that's a must for the level of success and growth that she's been able to accomplish. And well, it's generally delightful to see what drives her spirit. Many cons of working at an agency aren't present here because leadership pays attention and actually listens. If things get to be too much, speak up! Everyone is ready to drop what they're doing to support their colleagues - including the owner. Even as a consultant, I've not felt this appreciated as an employee... maybe ever...

Pros

My time here was decent. Everyone was friendly and passionate about helping their clients. This agency works hard for its clients and has established a good reputation based on that. It is successful for a reason.

Cons

There's too many dumpster fires and sometimes it is obvious to the client. The obvious answer is to slow down business as to not to overwhelm the team but for some reason, that's not an option. SOPs are nonexistent. There were also some issues between leadership and team members of ethnic descent that were unsavory. It is best to hire based on talent, not appearances or classifications. I would suggest a blind hiring process. I also did not have much of a personal life the entire time I worked here.
