Pros

It’s a good way to get into Hong Kong especially if you don’t have any experience because they employ anyone who wants a job The job is easy - everything is provided You will meet people

Cons

The job is easy - which means it also very quickly gets boring and repetitive. Very soon it’s like Groundhog Day……the same thing over and over again on a daily basis Money is the priority, not education. You’ll have kids in classes way above their ability levels, kids thrown into classes at the last minute without any warning, kids on trial who don’t speak to understand a word of English yet so can’t even understand basic commands and don’t be surprised if you get 3 or 4 of them unexpectedly chucked in to a class of 6…..in a room that probably comfortably holds 4. It’s basically babysitting The time off is…….basically non existent. Holidays are so minimal I don’t see how it’s even legal. You get 2 days off a year that you can can choose - but actually, the likelihood of those leave days being approved is pretty slim cos they are so short staffed they are unlikely to have subs available to cover your requested leave. The rest of the days off are set by the company and are at random points during the year, a couple of days here and there. Their sick leave policy is ridiculous - if you are unfortunate enough to get sick not only do you lose the days pay for however many days you are off you also have to go to a doctor on the day you call in sick and pay for a doctors note. If you don’t get one they’ll give you an official warning - no one seems to have worked out that if you are genuinely sick there’s a good chance the last thing your going to be able to do is trek to a doctor just for a sick note - that doesn’t even benefit you in anyway other than not getting a warning because they still take your pay off you!! The hours are LONG - you will always be at work. You teach until 6.30pm at the earliest with lots of people having at least a 1hr commute. There is also a lot of dead wasted time during the day. They will rip you off if you choose to stay in their accommodation - it’s an easy hook for people who are new to Hong Kong but their apartment are in poor condition, more expensive than what you’ll pay elsewhere and they’ll rip you off with utilities telling you it has to be an estimate. Get a hotel or air b&b for the first couple of months The training is terrible and they tell you you’ll get a training ‘bonus’. What they don’t tell you is that you don’t get an actual salary until the following month so your 6000HKD bonus is what you’ll need to live on for your first month….impossible. They’ll charge you 10000HKD if you leave within your first year. If you aren’t sure you can put up with the monotony and working for a bad company for 12 months be prepared to lose your money HR are terrible. The company overall is terrible
