Pros

Usually good work-life balance, although much less so for International Programs. Decent benefits, office is diverse and has a very friendly environment from senior staff all the way down to the unpaid interns. Fairly generous per diem for a non-profit. Encouraged by directors to pursue professional development programs.

Cons

I always felt there was little room for advancement within the organization. NARUC is growing, but it seems to be focusing expansion on its lower ranks with increased interns and research assistants more than anything. International and Domestic programs are quite separated and rarely collaborate. Frequent travel got old quick, especially when many coworkers felt they were doing 2-3 people's jobs at once.

Pros

--Interesting travel opportunities --Exposure to a unique sector --Good healthcare plan

Cons

In my opinion and experience: --A corporate culture in the International department where staff appear to be seen merely as performers, not as valued individual people deserving of work-life balance --Lack of accountability and transparency from leadership --Insufficient staffing and lack of robust systems result in inefficiencies --Inadequate retirement plan, which can be very de-motivating --Lack of real, demonstrated commitment to DEI
