Pros

Exceptionally nice office, good health and 401K benefits although those have eroded in recent years. Opportunities to travel and visit schools across the nation. to fulfill the mission of improving STEM education and better teacher training. New CEO seems like a great guy who is trying to make it right.

Cons

Where did it all go wrong? The mission is definitely worthy, but the evolution of the company has not been pretty and has also been a huge waste of donor funding in many ways. I would never recommend for anyone to work for this company. The actual work that goes on in interfacing with teachers and schools is wonderful. However, inside the office, the toxic atmosphere, the backstabbing, the lack of management, the lack of communication and the politics are stifling. Harassment and bullying by managers was rewarded. I witnessed so many great, brilliant people treated so very badly. Top management are too many and are grossly overpaid for a non-profit. HR Department is not supportive of employees. Overall, the worst job I ever had. What a nightmare!

Pros

-Bold vision to transform the face of STEM: NMSI advances STEM education by diversifying the teacher workforce, building the capacity of STEM teachers and school systems, and expanding access for more students to excel in STEM learning and see themselves in STEM careers -- especially students from underrepresented groups. NMSI has a strong research department with long-term data showing that their students -- across all demographic groups -- consistently outpace national averages in advanced STEM enrollment, AP exams, persistence through college, and earning STEM degrees. -Strong 5-yr strategic plan: NMSI has a well thought-out strategic plan that keeps staff rowing together to build educator and school system capacity, leverage high-quality technology solutions, and elevate supports for Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities. -Led and staffed by hard working and committed people: During the pandemic, NMSI did better than many nonprofits and even for-profits. But eventually strategic shifts and a restructure were necessary, which caused hard feelings for some people in Sept 2023. But the organization emerged stronger and more effective. It is clear why the restructure was necessary, and the new leadership team has been sincere in their work to make NMSI an irresistible and equitable organization where all staff feel empowered and safe to do their best work.

Cons

Significant change at the organization is difficult for some. And NMSI has taken on some of society's most inextricable problems, which is not a good fit for all people.
