Pros

I was initially given the opportunity to build my own team, and I was able to bring on talented, trusted coworkers. My direct team members were supportive, collaborative, and genuinely wanted to make improvements. The work itself had potential, and there were areas where positive change could have been made with proper leadership support.

Cons

In my experience, the CEO’s leadership style created a highly toxic environment. Promises made during hiring about autonomy, support, and culture change were not upheld. There is no functioning HR department, and all HR-related issues go directly to the CEO. This creates a major conflict of interest, especially when many concerns are related to his behavior. Leadership relies heavily on fear-based management, focusing on blame instead of solutions or process improvement. The CEO frequently oversteps boundaries, undermining managers instead of empowering them. My replacement was hired immediately after my departure, and all the team members I brought on were terminated to make way for the new leader’s own team, which created further instability and loss of morale. The overall environment discourages transparency, psychological safety, and long-term employee retention.

Pros

The people I get to work with every day are what make this job so amazing. While I’d describe the company as more medium-sized than small, it truly feels like a close-knit team... almost like a family. One thing I really appreciate is how willing everyone is to jump in and support projects, even when they fall outside their typical responsibilities. It’s not about being asked to go beyond your role all the time, but rather having opportunities to contribute, learn, and make an impact beyond your day-to-day work. There’s also a lot of room for growth here, especially for developers and more technical team members. The company invests in your development by paying for certifications and offering incentives tied to them, which makes a big difference. Personally, I've been allowed to take two classes about AI that have positivity impacted my skill set and developed me as a marketer since I started. This has been huge for me, a "not-so-techy" type of person. Overall, it’s a great place to build your career. Honestly, I wouldn’t think of it as "just a stop along the way," because if you’re anything like me, you’ll enjoy it so much that you’ll want to stay for the long haul.

Cons

The fact that we are fully remote (which I usually would view as a positive factor) but simply because I truly enjoy my coworkers and would like to get to spend more time with them.
