Great products and services, bad leadership - Anonymous employee OneAmerica Financial Employee Review

Pros

The products and services offered by OneAmerica are stellar; a real standout among an often over-crowded financial services market. Free on-site parking is a rarity in downtown Indianapolis. Monthly employee appreciation events (Best Days) provide networking and socialization experiences.

Cons

A significant amount of change over the past 18 months has left many individuals across the organization unclear of their titles, compensation or jobs descriptions. Human Resources set (and missed) at least three deadlines to deliver their revised career framework. The Marketing department in particular has undergone two regorganizations within the past 6 months with individuals moving roles, changing leaders, moving back to old roles and moving to yet new leaders. This has had a severe impact on morale as well as delivery timelines, with little or no communication to other impacted business areas. Many industry professionals gauge career advancement based on job titles. Some individuals were seemingly gifted with titles some may associate with advancement without having relevant industry experience or any experience within a given practice area. In fact, explicit experience requirements have been ignored outright without clear reasons why. This sends the message that hard work, dedication and deep industry knowledge aren’t qualities worthy of advancement within the organization.

Pros

The best part of OneAmerica are the people! The individual contributors I worked with are some of the smartest people I've met and they made it a joy to go to work every day. The office spaces are comfortable. Good benefits and a pension. I loved working for OneAmerica.

Cons

Constant organizational change and instability. Most recently, they’re going through a “transformation”, which led to phases of eliminations a couple times a year. Restructuring happens, it's part of business, but the way this was handled was really poor. Leadership let us know that they hired consultants and that changes were coming months in advance, which led to apprehensive employees. They then spread the layoffs out over several months, keeping people on edge. The culture of fear this decision caused will take years to repair, with the culture taking a significant hit.
