Pros

Pay (although you will be capped), benefits (health care)

Cons

Too many to list them all. Main problem is regional management. This has been a problem for years but because the VP position has been a rotating door they continue to get away with horrible behavior. They are Insanely toxic - you will be talked down to, belittled, degraded and asked to do the workload of two people and then be in trouble when you can’t complete it all. They are completely unqualified for the position and don’t know what they’re talking about. Will not address certain employees by first name - only last name (yes like the military). They will lie to you and try to hide sales so they don’t have to pay your full, earned commission and then will be written up for questioning it. If you start making “too much money” (ie making sales and growing a territory) they will cut your territory down so you can’t make as much. In other words - you will receive a pay cut for doing a good job. Commission rate is not a standard across the board. Some make 1% which is the highest allowed. Some in the company that have been here for years only make a 1/2%. It all depends on the size of the territory. They start with the unspoken, capped salary that they pretend doesn’t exist then subtract your base salary and whatever percentage is leftover to hit that cap is what your commission rate will be. At the end of the day, the amount of sales you actually make won’t matter. You will never make more than the unspoken capped dollar amount. Micromanagement is company culture. The company is no longer the amazing textile company it once was. It’s run like a commodity by private equity led by a management team that is running the entire company into the ground. The company doesn’t seem to realize that the reputation within the design community (both designers and perspective employees) is not good. Our competitors know this and are using it to recruit employees away. The industry knows Perennials and Sutherland treats their employees like dirt and they’re taking advantage but the company is too arrogant to realize this is happening. Everything is a popularity contest. You will not advance or receive recognition unless you are liked by the highschool mean girls that are the management team. You will be told that this is not a 40 hour a week job. It’s expected and verbalized that you regularly work 60 hours a week. This is not a work ethic. This is an abuse of your employees for not hiring the amount of people that your companies workload demands. Beware that most of the “glowing reviews” here are directives by management to other members of management to bring up a bad (and accurate) review rating. In short - if you’re considering a position here…don’t. Save yourself.

Perennials and Sutherland Response
1y
We are disappointed to hear about the experience you describe at Perennials and Sutherland. We strive to create a positive work environment where all employees feel valued and supported, and we are disheartened to hear about your personal experience and how shockingly it differs from our intention. You have made very serious statements that we do not believe are consistent with our employees’ experience. We want to provide direct responses to particular points you have raised in this review: We can confidently state that we comply with all state and federal wage and hour laws and pay all employees at Perennials and Sutherland for all hours worked and all commissions owed to eligible employees per their commission agreements. We do not withhold or hide sales to avoid paying commissions. The company has been investing in our sales team members and increasing Outside Sales Representatives (OSR) since 2018. Our OSR total compensation and commissions have grown significantly during that time, with some periods impacted by economic conditions. We have opened new territories where we did not have physical representation previously, that had been handled by other OSRs in nearby territories. As the territories were redrawn, we have always worked to ensure our OSR total compensation remained whole. No one is capped for growth of total compensation; we continually review base and commission to ensure total compensation remains competitive. As with many companies within this industry, Perennials & Sutherland has transitioned from a founder-led business to private equity ownership. With this change in ownership came a change in leadership with the arrival of our first non-founder CEO in early 2023. While the founders transitioned into a more consultative role, and new competitive strategies developed, we remain a company that is rooted in passion for luxury design, product innovation, and providing premier customer service to the trade community. Those core brand values have never changed. We have worked diligently to continue to provide the same level of exceptional customer service for our clients. We have experienced no significant increase in turnover than we have had year-over-year; some of our sales employees have left to join our competitors, just as we hire new employees within the design industry in the Outside Sales Representative role. This is not unique to Perennials & Sutherland. We regularly conduct exit interviews with all employees and have not received feedback related to the experience you describe here as your own. Related to your comment about work hours, we do not have a mandated number of hours that an OSR has to work. The OSR role comes with a great deal of autonomy with the expectation of managing your own schedule to meet your goals. While the work week is 40 hours, some may be successful managing their schedule and workload within that timeframe, while other weeks may vary based on appointments, travel, product launches, etc. Many territories have fluctuated over the years, but in no way would we ask an OSR to do the work of two – we would understand the law of diminishing returns. Your comments are very concerning to us. If you are interested, we would like the opportunity to discuss your feedback in greater detail and specificity. Your comments about toxic behavior and belittling treatment are alarming, and certainly not the environment we foster or condone. Without further information about your individual experience, we are unable to directly address them appropriately. We highly encourage you to contact Human Resources directly at (214) 379-6460.

Pros

P and S has a wonderful team and each division and segment has truly become more integrated and aligned since I began. The product is king and the client experience is paramount here. The organization has come a long way to building structure and systems to better support the end user results. What I loved most is that I could ask for anything and it would at least be considered. The answer was never a hard no but rather how can we make this happen? I was supported by a wonderful management and leadership team and my peers were always very supportive.

Cons

Very supportive sr mgmt team
