Pros

There is a sort of visionary leadership that strives towards an ideal of work smart to be the best. This means Propellerhead changes fast, tries new things, is a reasonably transparent company with time, space and trust to do your job (as long as you're not wrecking the joint). It's a nice space to work, with latest Macs, up-to-date systems, the best coffee in Auckland, and you get a little free time to learn/share knowledge. I've never been bored here.

Cons

Sometimes new ideas or ways of working are introduced or removed without proper implementation or notification, and you have to figure out what's going on. You can't be too precious about anything as it might change (usually for the better). Also, there aren't enough people as it's hard to find talent as New Zealand too small for a company of this quality and ambition.

Pros

I had the pleasure of working remotely for this company for several years before getting the opportunity to relocate to their office in New Zealand, and the entire experience exceeded my expectations. The company was incredibly supportive throughout the entire relocation process, assisting with several things and making a potentially stressful move feel smooth and manageable. It was a clear demonstration of how much they value their employees. The office itself is amazing! strikes a perfect balance between being modern and fancy while still feeling cozy and welcoming. And yes, the coffee machine is absolutely fantastic! But more importantly, the work environment is phenomenal. It's filled with genuinely clever, kind, and helpful people. I've never experienced any office drama; there's a real sense of collaboration and mutual respect. One of the best aspects is the level of trust and autonomy given to employees. If you are a self-starter and don't like being micromanaged, you will thrive here. You're given the freedom to own your work, which is both empowering and motivating.

Cons

Honestly, it's difficult to pinpoint any significant cons. Any minor challenge I encountered was always met with a supportive response from the different teams...

Pros

- Exceptional Culture and Teamwork: A strong sense of community where colleagues genuinely help each other, creating a great internal environment. - Visionary Leadership: The founder’s innovative mindset translates directly into the company’s forward-thinking and clearly defined direction. - Highly Impactful Work: The product's large user base means the work is engaging, challenging, and provides a rewarding feeling of helping many people. - Flexibility and Benefits: Good benefits including employee shares combined with flexibility in hybrid work setup and taking time off allow for better work-life balance. - Engaging Events: High-quality, elegant annual company events provide excellent opportunities for socialising and strengthening company-wide connections.

Cons

- High Self-Management Required: The flat hierarchy means teams and employees must be self-managing, which can be a significant adjustment for those accustomed to traditional, highly structured corporate environments. - Expanded Role Scope: Roles often include shared responsibilities (e.g., championing documentation, onboarding, scrums or security) on top of core duties, which can add to the workload.
