Pros

High Product Turnover Drives Fresh Displays Due to Costco’s rapid inventory movement, plant displays are frequently restocked. This means customers often encounter fresh, vibrant stock, which helps maintain an appealing appearance. Bulk Buying Appeals to Serious Gardeners Costco’s merchandising focuses on value. Bundles of plants, multi-packs, and large containers are displayed prominently, appealing to both hobby gardeners and landscape professionals. Efficient Layout Supports Quick Shopping Costco’s greenhouse areas tend to prioritize wide aisles and high-visibility product stacks. This makes it easy for customers to browse and grab items quickly without complex navigation. Eye-Level and Pallet-Based Merchandising Supports Impulse Buys Strategically placed plant pallets near entrances or in high-traffic zones encourage impulse purchases—especially during spring and early summer.

Cons

Limited Space for Creative or Themed Displays Unlike specialty garden centers, Costco’s greenhouse displays are functional and bulk-focused. This limits opportunities for creative or inspirational merchandising that tells a story or guides customers through plant choices. Repetitive Layout Can Feel Impersonal While efficient, the pallet-style merchandising lacks the charm or intimacy of traditional greenhouses. Customers looking for a curated or personalized experience may feel underserved. Inconsistent Signage and Plant Information Plant tags and signs are sometimes generic or minimal, offering limited care guidance. This can make it harder for less-experienced gardeners to make informed choices. Environmental Exposure Is a Risk Outdoor Costco greenhouse areas (common in many locations) expose plants and signage to wind, sun, and rain, which can damage both product quality and merchandising materials.
