Pros

I joined R360 a few months after I graduated college in a hope that working at an agency could help me learn more about the direction I wanted to take my career. Two years later, I'm still here and thriving. I joined as part of the fellow program, which I found incredibly helpful to help me adjust to working life. In the time since I was a fellow, the fellow program has been streamlined to be much more cut and dry, and is a great way to become an associate (or learn that you want to keep exploring different types of positions as a young professional). As an associate, I've had some incredible mentors, particularly on the healthcare team, both from very senior staff and mid-level directors who have dedicated a lot of time and have vested interest in my success. I will note, however, that this depends on the client teams you're initially assigned to. I got very lucky, but there are other teams or managing directors that I don't think I would have had as much of a positive experience with. Overall, I've had a very positive experience at Rational, and have grown so so much as an employee. My quality of work, confidence in myself, and hard skills have improved tremendously, and I credit that growth to my teammates here. I've learned a lot about various industries and feel that when necessary, I would be able to easily transition to another company and succeed there because of the way that Rational has prepared me. I'm, however, looking forward to staying at the firm for the foreseeable future and continuing to grow.

Cons

The pay isn't great as a fellow, but that seems to be the case across the board in DC for these type of positions. In comparison to other larger PR firms, the entry-level pay is absolutely competitive if not better (or was when I started). However, you absolutely have to be ready to learn quickly to be successful. If you do not work well in a fast-paced environment or independently, this is not the place for you. You certainly have support -- I've never felt like I didn't have someone to turn to for a question or like I was alone on a project -- but you need to be self-sufficient to succeed. Your teams will be there for you, but you need to be ready to be there for your teams. Be prepared to work late sometimes, as you would in most DC jobs.

Pros

If you want to become a better version of your professional self come here. If you want to work with friends, manage consistent tasks and leave with energy for happy hour maybe not. Everyone learns something. Company structure has interns and managing directors and senior associates providing value and learning opportunities equally. Moving into new office soon! Literally no space right now lol because of all the growth You constantly get to do new things and take responsibility for those things. Which is great for building careers and skill sets. Just a tough pace to keep up with. I keep a 9-6, but know others who work out of those hours. I just have a really busy 9-6.

Cons

This is the toughest place I’ve ever worked lol. Not an easy job… they’re growing incredibly fast and everyone is at the top of their game so it can feel hard to keep up. But I’ve never learned more so that’s something 😮‍💨 AND EVERYONE STILL REQUIRES QUALITY AT A HIGH SPEED Inconsistent expectations across all levels. Lotsa new people, maybe not a con, it just feels like everyone is training together at times. Also because DC is changing so rapidly. Weird that there isn’t an HR team. Most people don’t have a direct reporting chain or a singular manager to go to. They have many! I think it’s a con but can be either.

Pros

Overall my experience at Rational 360 has been positive. I've grown a lot in my role and have been trusted with meaningful responsibility across multiple clients, which has been both rewarding and motivating. I've also had the opportunity to build strong, valuable client relationships, which have allowed me to build trust with each of them. My team leads consistently provide constructive and positive feedback on my work, and I feel that has contributed to my development. While working here, I have had many opportunities to strengthen my leadership and management skills, which will be applicable throughout my career. Lastly, I've felt that my managers are genuinely invested in my professional growth at Rational 360 and beyond.

Cons

Like any fast-growing company, Rational 360 is navigating some growing pains. I believe senior leadership is aware of these challenges and is working to address them, but acknowledgement and communication from senior management on these issues would be appreciated. While there is a promotion timeline in place for junior staff, it can sometimes feel arbitrary. Junior employees are often told they’re ineligible for promotion solely due to the amount of time spent in their current role, even when their performance is consistently strong. All staff should be evaluated based on merit, not just tenure. While management has made some exceptions for standout employees, the standard should be that everyone is assessed on their individual performance, not a fixed timeline.
