Great colleagues, lousy management - Magazine Editor Reed Business Information Employee Review

Pros

My coworkers are really excellent. My direct supervisor is also excellent. There's a lot of prestige in working for a major industry publication. I've learned a great deal about magazine publishing and editing, as well as about the industry that my magazine covers. The benefits are great.

Cons

This may all change when RBI is sold off, of course, but I've been really unhappy with the way upper management and Reed Elsevier management communicates--or rather doesn't communicate--with those of us in the trenches. I get more information from Google News than I do from management. Also, the cost-cutting measures we've seen lately are absurd. Vital personnel have been laid off, and we can't pay freelancers competitive rates, so the quality of writing is dropping. I don't trust management and I don't feel like management trusts us.

Pros

The people I work with and for are some of the best colleagues I've had the pleasure to work with.

Cons

Very high-paced, and understaffed in several key areas due large in part to COVID-19 related issues affecting the industry and workplaces.

Pros

RBI in the past has offered a really good benefits package - a decent selection of health converage plans that include medical, dental and vision; three weeks vacation after two years, and full investment in 401K plan after three years, with the company matching up to 6% of employee contributions (if I recall correctly).

Cons

Right now it is suffering like most trade publications, following the trend of magazines and the overall economy. There is a hiring freeze, and there were two separate rounds of layoffs so far in 2009. I think the culture and the environment vary according to which office you work in, and who your manager and co-workers are. Each publication or group of publications can be different. I started out with a manager who had a pretty bad reputation (I only worked with her briefly) but ended up with a great manager before I left.
