Pros

Complete autonomy. Do as little or as many shifts as you want. Can see clinic reviews from other relief vets. Pay is negotiable. Never had overtime denied. App tracks commute mileage for you.

Cons

Hospitals that are newer to Roo tend to pay out less per shift

Pros

There is flexibility in scheduling, and some guidance is provided on filing taxes and tracking expenses. I recommend starting part-time to gain experience managing expenses before transitioning to full-time.

Cons

I have observed several concerning issues: favoritism toward clinics over contracted relief staff, shifts posted below minimum wage (while technically legal, this is neither appropriate nor ethical), and misleading claims about fees (you do not take home 100% of earnings—relief clinics can confirm this). Continuing education opportunities are minimal, with only a few events hosted by Roo in an entire year. There is also little regard for state licensing laws or ensuring compliance with clinics requesting relief, leaving contractors vulnerable to violations. Compensation is another issue, as many shifts are posted at surprisingly low rates despite requiring at least five years of experience. Some clinics are allowed unexplained special pricing adjustments, and occasionally shifts appear for roles such as receptionists or drivers, which seems out of place for a veterinary relief platform. While diversity is valuable, staff recruitment does not seem to be consistently based on experience. Finally, district leads have demonstrated a willingness to disregard contractual obligations, often becoming defensive when this is pointed out. These situations reveal a lack of professionalism and experience in leadership.
