Pros

At Sandbox, hiring focuses on bringing in respectful, passionate, and solution-oriented people, and it shows. I'm someone new to the solar industry and the trades, overall; I started as a freelance web designer and SEO specialist for sandboxsolar.com. Now, I design solar plansets and help manage the shop. Producing quality work, driving oneself to learn, and valuing collaboration and others' opinions go a long way at Sandbox. I wasn't anything -- remotely -- like a standard candidate for a technical role in the trades, but management saw those qualities in me and gave me a chance. One thing that speaks to the team culture at Sandbox is the prominence of the installer. The installers are always part of the conversation, as they are, functionally, the most important part of company. Period. For example, I'm routinely asking the installers their opinion on the materials I'm sourcing - because they know how the rubber meets the road. The sales & marketing teams are constantly asking installers/crew leads/electricians feasibility questions, as well. It does your company culture wonders when all opinions matter. This is in stark contrast to pharmacy, my previous career --- where my technicians labored tirelessly and were treated as a voiceless, disposable work force by upper management. Complete 180° from the corporate culture I'll never miss. I'll end with some proof. Sandbox Solar has a 4.9 star rating average on Google, spanning a sample of 156. Here's how that happened: Hire motivated, collaborative, friendly people --> Let them be themselves, facilitate inter-team collaboration, and provide social events that don't suck (Recently, we went to Dacono to see Sandbox's sponsored stock car race at the National Speedway; had a blast) --> Set a high standard for work, but always be willing to provide ample resources/time to facilitate said work --> Employees at all levels feel valued and are happy (to the extent that this blazing sun allows) --> Teams produce excellent work --> Customers overwhelmingly thrilled and the five star reviews pour in

Cons

If I had to gripe about anything, benefits could be more extensive and there could be a more diverse workplace. Then again, that's a direct outcome of the tradesmen demographic. Everyone is treated well & respected, however.

Pros

It's hard to condense my story with this company, but here it goes... I was hired and worked my butt off as an installer. Anytime year round, with few exceptions, I could take vacation. That was accompanied with a 3% matching IRA. We have an HSA and a family care physician. We have our electrical hours logged regularly for aspiring electricians. They always tried to loyally hire/promote internally. Sandbox has paid holidays and throw great holiday parties. 5 months in, my crew lead left the company and management offered me his position. Naturally, I accepted and got a 25% wage increase. The project managers were ALWAYS available to answer questions. They would even leave the office to come to my jobsites to check things personally. My benefits expanded to include the company vehicle for my commute with gas included. Over time I asked for harder and larger projects which they were more than happy to throw my way. As a result, I've broken a few company records for residential system sizes, gotten involved in our commercial projects, and my portfolio has never looked better. I am now on my 3rd year with the company and have begun learning how to design. I never imagined I'd be learning electrical and engineering without a formal degree. It's worth mentioning, many of the original staff have spent time in the field which means something to me as a laborer. The CEO, our project managers, our salesman, and electricians have all done the hard work of installing these systems. Since I joined the company, our benefits have only increased. Our wages in installation have increased across the board. Our PTO was increased from 1.5 to 2.5 per 40. There's been talk about adding a 401k to supplement our IRAs. The work culture has been and still is very relaxed and hilarious. I have never laughed so hard in the workplace as I have here. Some of my coworkers have become friends off the clock. I could go on and on, but two of those guys are currently ripping on me for how long I'm taking to write this so I'll leave it at that lol.

Cons

We have yet to install solar panels in space... yet.
