Pros
The job it self is ok, you work as a cashier, talk to customers, give em' lottery tickets, fix up fast food, refill shelves, clean and sometimes help out people,
It's all fine and standard and I'd give the job a 3 out of 5 but the problems with the boss at the ST1 Mariehamn gas station completely ruin this job and tanks the rating.
Cons
The key problem of this job at the location I have worked thus far is the boss who is in charge of it. Previously this was a Shell station and recently it shifted to a ST1 station but that did not change anything really at all.
The boss is a well connected person, he is even a politician and this can cause issues if you bring up criticisms against him if it falls into the wrong ears. He does not listen to his staff when they bring up problems related to him, to how he behaves and the things he does, he is in general a very untrustworthy person that lies a lot which seems to fit very well with his political career goals.
I am someone who was promised after the 1st year of summer work back in 2021 that I'd be given a full time employment contract, by the end of summer the boss rug pulled me and told me I can only continue working as a sporadic part-time worker in autumn and winter where often you are just randomly called in to jump in, which makes it very difficult to have any sort of plans for a day when there's little to no scheduling or planning for your work, sure we do get A schedule but it is very fluid, you get very little work time set on it, you are more depended on the whims of other coworkers if they wanna hand you extra hours ie they get sick or feel unfit to work that day and ask you to come in.
Fast forward 5 years later, still not allowed to get a proper full time contract, still stuck on a 0 hour contract that also has no health benefits ie going to a private hospital if sick that the company covers. I keep asking for more work, I take any shifts I get offered to take by my coworkers, I ask to at least get a guarantee to work full time during summer as early as December, What happens ? he grabs new people in January and February to work for summer instead of the employee who has been there for 5 years and asking to work more, he then comes up with an excuse It's not ok to let me work more cause he took in new summer work people, ignoring and trying to gaslight me into forgetting that I have asked him months ahead for full time or even just summer work meaning that excuse of his falls flat completely. This is now the 3rd year he has been acting like this with summer work, first 2 years at the very least I could get summer work there fully for 2 months before being shifted back to part-time but now not even that, let alone actual full time employment that would give me job security there. Do note, most folk who do work to a degree full time there still are stuck with a 0 hour contract meaning he can still fire you on the spot or on a whim decide to not give you as much work again anymore, only 2 or 3 people actually have or had some form of minimum time guaranteed there.
Additional issues with him is he likes to spread lies and mince his words around people, he will pro-actively say one thing to one person and then another thing to the other person to try and cause personal issues among the staff, he might say that others don't like you at work but when you talk with them they have no clue what you are talking about. He will say that other part time workers at the station don't wanna work more but I am a friend with one of em and he said he has been asking for more work for months and months now too and gets blown off instead.
This boss completely destroys the work environment due to this, the idea that someone working at a place 5 years and is asking to work MORE gets denied constantly is insane, Imagine having an employee that can work fully alone , solo, little to no problems, knows how pretty much anything works and you keep denying to employee him fully to instead take some newcomers you wanna use for 2 or 3 months and then toss away again.
