Pros

Short, early hours. Papers to be delivered before 7:30am, most routes take 2-4 hours depending on the size. Tips are great - especially around Christmas Ability to pick up of other routes. Friendly co-workers & sometimes ok staff. OK Pay - but you are paid per newspaper delivered.

Cons

Management per depot varies - but mine is terrible. Charges $5 per wet paper, $5 per missed paper, other errors can have $10 charges, all while you're paid around a quarter per paper to deliver, sometimes less for specialty papers. Lots of wear and tear to your car. Huge fees for your route being 'down' if you don't have someone to cover it if you're out of town last minute (emergencies, etc)

Pros

I work with a lot of nice, clever people. Working for a newspaper feels good even if the outlook isn't great, there's plenty of good work to be done and engineering management is great here. The money could frankly be better, but there's good time flexibility and the culture within the team is good.

Cons

It's the CEO. The problem is at the top. He's erratic, he micromanages, he ducks accountability reality, and the disrespect he has for workers is palpable. He'll impulsively rescind outstanding offers, seemingly without compassion or respect for the peoples lives he's just upturned. He's also burning through talent by giving them insane amounts of work to do in little time, and eroding the culture that management below him is trying to create. All of these concerns have been raised at the top of our lungs, none of them have gotten through. He loves the glamor and prestige of running this paper more than the work, and it's increasingly apparent this institution is nothing more than a schmoozing and self promotion vehicle for his political career.
