Pros

The kids are amazing and the only reason teachers stay, to be honest. Most of the other teachers are great, too.

Cons

The leadership/administration is, in a word, bad. They treat teachers like their little lackeys and expect us to do a bunch of extra work for terrible pay, especially in comparison to the School District of Philadelphia. They will give you extra duties constantly without any extra pay (or even bothering to ask), have been horrific with their COVID policies, and are passive aggressive (or just straight up aggressive) whenever you bring any concerns up. They pretty much send the message that they want you to shut up and deal with whatever they decide to throw at you. The school rarely, if ever, acknowledges issues going on in the community (especially regarding racism). When they do, it's several days after the matter and lukewarm at best. So many students of color feel uncomfortable here because of the environment leadership has fostered; it's gross. They keep around a teacher who everyone knows says the n-word in front of her students, and isn't actually qualified to teach. How is this allowed? The owners of the school don't have any qualifications when it comes to running a school except having the money to do so. They're all chiropractors, which is fine and dandy, but that doesn't cut it in this industry. Teacher turnover is a HUGE problem. I've been here less than 5 years and am considered an old-timer because so many people come and go. One of the main reasons why that is: the pay. I get paid nearly $10K less than I would in the School District of Philadelphia. By comparison, the "owner" of the school (who no one ever sees; I legitimately have NEVER seen her) pays herself $220K. Because that's ethical....

Pros

Tech conscious, students get to explore passions in their majors, teachers are relatively free to teach what curriculum they want and there is common PLC time every week with academic teams

Cons

Long adjustment period as new teacher to school; lots of new policies to get used to (no paper, intense requirements when it comes to lesson plans and professional responsibilities) This was especially true when there was no prior curriculum provided Low accountability for students — lots of class cutting that goes unchecked (hoping it’s better this year with new admin) Decisions made by CEO and charter school admin not always clear and doesn’t always have students’ or teachers’ best interests or wants/needs in mind A lot happens behind closed doors, and most decisions seem to be made with that image in mind and giving the illusion that this is a well put together school with lots of money… but the projects that get the most money are gate kept and it’s hard to figure out what actually gets funded and why
