Pros

I loved being able to work with the clients we served. The job can be difficult, but is very rewarding. I was also able to work with some of my peers that I still highly respect and trust. It's pretty easy to move up quickly in the company (but this is unfortunately due to extremely high turnover).

Cons

I worked at SLS for about two years, and held multiple positions at the company. There are many serious issues going on here. If you're looking for a place to make a difference and gain experience working with adults with mental illness, this may be a great field for you - but you may want to look for another company if you'd like to avoid major burnout and plenty of company drama. Lack of cultural sensitivity and diversity inclusion training is painfully evident, even though the company’s clientele is made up almost solely of people from diverse, marginalized populations. Executive leadership consistently the buck onto middle management when things go wrong and revenue goals are not met, while middle management is set up to fail by impossible workloads and little to no support from higher-ups. Upper management claims they want feedback from mid-level and entry-level employees, but if you speak up about the issues you and your team are experiencing (no matter how professionally/respectfully), you are scolded for spreading gossip or not being positive enough to fit the company culture. Almost the entire senior leadership team is made up of the CEO's family, which leads to lack of true accountability at the highest levels. Family ties were even hidden when a new exec was hired to create the illusion that you don't have to be related to the CEO in order to move up in the company. If you're looking to make a difference, feel supported in your role, and find a company you can grow into a career with, please don't be fooled by what will probably be a great sell during your interview - this is not a company that will follow through on their promises. There's so much manipulation and dysfunction on a daily basis, and you do not have to work in an environment like that just to get experience in the field. Find somewhere that will support you in the work that you do - places like that really do exist.

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us at SLS. We are disappointed to hear that while you enjoyed working with our clients, you did not enjoy your time here overall. In regards to some of your feedback - family ties at SLS have never been a secret, as we are proudly a family owned and run business! We love that we have so many people who refer their family and friends to work with us, because it shows us that they love where they work enough to bring their loved ones aboard. We have 2 individuals on our executive leadership team of 4 that are not family. Almost all of our general leadership is made up of non-family who have been promoted into their roles because they were well deserving - not due to turnover. We care very much about the feedback of all of our employees, and we are sorry to hear that you did not feel that your voice was heard while you were here. That is never our goal, and are disappointing to hear about this. We encourage you to reach out to us directly to share your feedback, so that we can learn more about your unique experience, and how we can improve moving forward. Again, thank you for your time and feedback! -Olivia Weidner, Talent Acquisition Manager

Pros

SLS is a company that truly focuses on mission and makes decisions based on their values. They also invest heavily in training and development, have clear processes, and clarity in communication.

Cons

It's a hard industry! Direct care teams have higher turnover than support teams, but management continues to work to improve and make it a desirable place to stay!
