Pros

- engaging, fun, brilliant, and compassionate coworkers - relentless experimentation to fully engage its customers and further save them money - general feeling of camaraderie instead of usual hierarchy - management owns up to its mistakes and tries to set example through action and demonstration of themselves, instead of just delegating or ordering - culture is rooted in learning and improving

Cons

- because of a culture of learning and improving, mistakes can be made that affect employees and set a tone not intended - communication and “finding our stride” was far more difficult than I think any of us expected during the pandemic. - While the shift to remote allowed us to improve our reach for new employees, I think management at times fell back to the “butt in seat” mentality in that our salary was payment for our time, not our work output, and all without realizing it. Thus creating an invisible mismatch in expectations between employees and managers. Hopefully they have improved, but I’m sure at the very least they are trying to.

Pros

Supportive co-workers, interesting problems to solve/work to do, lots of flexibility for creativity. The culture is people and team focused and the company mission is to help users save money, which everyone is really committed to. Like any small company, each employee has high visibility and high impact over the outputs.

Cons

Trim is an early stage start-up, which means many of its Pros can also be seen as Cons if you're not prepared for the environment. The business is still working to put new systems and structures in place, and there is always a lot to do -- this is great if you are prepared to have ownership over your work, but wouldn't be a fit for someone who needs a lot of structure to feel supported.

Pros

- After several years in development, the culture and values at Trim are better than you will find in most early-stage startups. - The company is still very much in a “move fast and break things” mentality, which can be exciting as an engineer to move very quickly. - The office is in a great location.

Cons

- Little to no vision or cohesion driving the product. What started as a subscription-cancelling SMS bot turned into a Comcast-negotiating Chrome extension turned into a debt payoff subscription. There is no leadership about what Trim should do or be; it is left as an exercise to the engineering team, which is not prepared, trained, or supported to handle that part of the business. - What started as an open, honest workplace has become deceptive to its employees, its investors, and its users. Perhaps transparency is a luxury only successful startups can afford. - With the exception of the Growth/Marketing department, the leadership at Trim is inexperienced, and it shows. The process of prioritization is flighty and changes constantly; there is little to no agreement or consensus about what should be done, and a lot of work is wasted. - Lastly, this is not a “tech” company. It is a tech-assisted contractor-management company. Claims that it is using AI/Machine Learning are completely fabricated. Engineers who want to grow and learn about interesting and stimulating parts of the industry should look elsewhere; there is very little exciting proprietary tech to be had at Trim.
