Pros

Because it is a smaller GC, you get involved in more aspects of managing a construction project. The company tries to hire a diverse workforce. Being one of the few minority owned GC's in Chicago, UJAMAA focuses on having community hires and pushes subs on their jobs to have a certain percentage of hires that are minorities from the south side community. Unlike most companies, the owner seems to make improving the community and helping people part of the company's mission.

Cons

Training is slim to none. It can be hard to learn and progress as a Project Engineer if you are put with a bad PM. You are expected to work at least 10 hours a day even if you only have 8 hours of work. Expect to get scolded if you do not. Poor benefits. No 401k until after a year of employment. No health insurance until after 3 months of employment. One week of vacation after 6 months. Turnover seems to be very high, and they seem to hire and fire people on a whim.

Pros

The workplace/ culture of the company makes people comfortable, like a family.

Cons

Over the years, projects have become more important than employee development. This prevents employees from acquiring the proper skills to further their careers.
