Pros

911 hospital based EMS service. No firefighting. That's a separate city entity, yeah!. Protocols are very assertive with an emphasis that we're going to take care of our patient the same way the ER if possible. It's not just load and drive fast to the hospital and hope for the best. Emphasis on education and training since the protocols are not cookbook. You have to think! Don't apply here if you need protocols that hold your hand through every step of the way. Medical Director very supportive and encouraging new treatment ideas if backed by science and practice. Trucks are new, equipment is in good shape, and have everything you need to run calls. First responders are UMC EMS paramedic-staffed Fox trucks (4WD SUVs) and the Lubbock Fire Rescue (at least EMT-B level). Staffed with paramedic only crews, and with some paramedic/EMT crews if the EMT is currently in paramedic school. No EMT/EMT crews at all, and all EMT-B or EMT-I must be in school to earn their paramedic certification or they're no longer employed. UMC is a great employer; best pay for an entry-level paramedic in the area. 12 hour shifts unless you pick up a shift at one of the two county stations with 24 hours shifts. Call volume varies. Can be just a couple of calls a shift to 12, but the Service Director keeps track and the hospital will allow him to staff another truck if proven consistently busy.

Cons

Transparency at UMC EMS is a problem. You sometimes feel like your left in the dark or crew suggestions are just swept under the rug. Trust is an issue with upper mngment. As with any employer, there's politics to deal with but nothing really bad. Not much for a career ladder with EMS, unlike for nurses and other hospital positions.
