Typical contractor, poor benefits, incompetent middle management - Systems Administrator VERTEX Solutions Employee Review

Pros

Interesting job at first but get mundane babysitting computers and trainees all day.

Cons

Pay varies wildly, same exact level techs can have salaries $20k apart from each other. Low ball salary offers initially but they suddenly find money for a pay raise once you put in resignation. Very poor benefits, most people there are retired military and have military veterans free healthcare so everyone else is stuck with a crap plan that cost me hundreds per month to cover my family. Site managers and project manager seemed completely incompetent and should not be involved in a technical project like this. Project manger could not even bother to remember our names when visiting. Fellow techs were mostly competent, some hired as techs with no or very little previous IT experience. Many of the best techs have left for higher paying positions on base.

Pros

As a fully remote software engineer, I am part of a swarm of new hires - most of the team has been there for less than a year. The team is smart and talented and seems to have been filtered to keep or jerks and aholes. The work involves learning a lot of interesting new skills and the structure is loose enough that you can choose your own path. So far, I am happy to have started my new job here. (I have already recommended working here to a friend.)

Cons

I see two challenges: First, as a fully remote team, we have to work harder to learn to trust and rely on each other. Second, as a relatively small company in a field dominated by industry giants, there is a speculative nature to the enterprise - it is hard to fully predict (for better and worse) what will happen in the next year, in the next few years.

Pros

Working Remote was a plus

Cons

In the year I was there, I had 4 different managers. Vertex does not value employees other than white men that came from other big corporations that they failed at. They put “woman-owned” to look pretty and win contracts but the leadership decisions are all old white men that continue the instability that is Vertex. If you need a transitional job, work here, but don’t expect to stay long.
