Worked as a transcriber for almost 2 years to make extra money as a student. I enjoy typing, listening to people, and correcting grammar so I thought this would be a great job. Great for flexibility, able to drop files without having to give a reason. A few files had interesting topics. The support agents were usually very friendly and understanding. If you type a 45-minute file for £20, it feels easy to build up earnings if you do one every day, but when you have lots of time to spare and end up spending 3 hours on it, it comes to less than minimum wage.

The quality of files was mostly terrible, which made the transcription process even longer and harder. You get penalised if you flag too much inaudible speech, which feels unfair as it's not your fault if the interviewer put their recorder in the middle of a giant room with a focus group of 12 people. They try to put this into consideration by allowing you to flag more, but if you can't understand anything due to bad quality audio, then you never will, especially with non-native speakers. After you submit a file, your work is 'proofread'. Basically it's just a few spot checks as apparently proofreaders don't have the time to check the whole 1hr file. This doesn't make sense to me as I had to write the whole file, the company advertises 99% accuracy, why don't the proofreaders check the whole file? You'll also get an email with feedback, usually pointing out things referencing mistakes on a file you can't remember doing and can't access again to learn from it. It all felt very one-way with proofreaders, a few times they changed things they thought were wrong when I had actually typed them correctly, and you can't have a discussion.
