Pros

Good year end bonuses and good weekly compensation.

Cons

No support from the office on projects. Lot's of backstabbing and blame when anything goes wrong. Instead of trying to analyze and correct a problem, the first question is who can we blame? Project managers are quick to duck responsibility and blame others. Company management takes on projects too big for company resources, then blames the field personnel for failures. Bad, poorly paid subcontractors make things worse. Despite a lot of talk about being "family friendly", they aren't. You'll be expected to work on weekends and holidays if you're in the field. Plenty of paperwork. Field superintendents have to do Daily Reports, Weekly Status Reports, SWPPP weekly and rain event reports, Safety reports and meetings and Look Ahead reports. You have to watch out what you say to anyone at the office. You never know who's going to jump up and bite you.

Pros

The only good thing about this company was flexibility, which after a while isn’t worth all the high school drama that went on.

Cons

One thing they were good at is consistently letting you down. The owner only sales hopes and dreams because that is all he is capable of delivering. Morals and ethics are not a thing at Z, nor do they stand up for anything they claim to be their “motto”. They were never willing to listen when people spoke and claim they have an open door policy type culture, the only culture they have is a narcissistic one. They pretend to have it all together, yet their own HR is even a joke. HR never would help the situation, they would just go tell the owner whatever is was told to them which is highly against what HR is supposed to be. Their HR is just a glorified personal assistant. You lead by example and the owner wants a professional atmosphere yet he always walked around the office high-fiving people like they were a bro team and starting more drama than taking the time to fix the issues. They never really let anyone grow, always micromanaged you, never taught you anything that would help you grow further in your career. One thing that ALWAYS bothered me is how they paid their trade partners, they paid late most of the time. The owner should be ashamed of himself for conducting business in that manner and it is wrong. As a former employee I can say that I have seen a lot of questionable things that went on during my time there, they have no character or integrity. The only Z way is to have no integrity, provide cheap, no work moral, under appreciate, lie, cheat, take advantage of and care way too much about your own personal reputation. They will gaslight and call you negative when you stand up for yourself, your worth, and good morals. They will also talk badly about people once they leave (I experienced this first hand by the owner). They will act like they care, but actions always speak louder than words. Of the years I worked there, each year my eyes opened up to who the owner truly was and it’s pretty sad. You are who you surround yourself by and when you surround yourself by others that lie and cheat people, that is who you deep down are and the behaviors you accept. No faking it and a grown adult will see through it. They always tried to hide things that would go on around the office, but due to the small office atmosphere people would find out on their own and not because people talked…people saw! The owner NEVER was willing to address the real issues and instead would go to other people outside of management to ask about an issue or person. Unless you’re willing to fix the problems the issues will always persist. You create the environment of your own company and until you look at yourself and your faults, the environment will always stay toxic. However, it is always easier for people to blame others for issues instead of looking at yourself. In this environment the best thing to do is remove yourself, in which after almost 4 years I did knowing I was leaving without a job lined up. My sanity and mental health was worth more to me than the fake toxic environment they have going on there. One thing I learned along the way is to fight because, they gave me nothing but trauma coping mechanisms. Good luck there if you aren’t willing to sell your soul to the devil.
