I have been working at ExL Events full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working in the conference industry means you'll have the ability to produce events on a variety of topics but working at ExL affords you the opportunity to be part of a cross functional team, allowing you to form working relationships with everyone at the company. Managers and directors keep an open door policy and are always open to hearing new ideas and are quick to put those ideas into action. With flexible hours...

    Cons

Standard benefit package and paid time off, but with WFH and flex hours it's a give and take.

    Advice to Management

Keep rewarding hard work and encourage team work.

I have been working at ExL Events full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The environment is very friendly with encouragement and praise enforced in each task. Coming together on projects is pretty simple, so the work becomes enjoyable. Personalized work hours (flexing, WFH, etc.) make the balance of work and free time incredibly convenient.

    Cons

Communication between departments could be improved. While the office allows for in-person collaborations, reaching out to out-of-office employees (in both associate and management positions) is more difficult.

I worked at ExL Events full-time

    Pros

    - Great work-life balance, flex hours, work from home days - The company is open and honest about the rigors of this industry and how difficult a deadline-oriented event business can be. ExL provides the best systems, computers and training I have seen within this niche industry. - The CEO and directors are available to help when issues arise

    Cons

    - They do a lot of conferences per year, and I feel it could be more beneficial if they focused on less events, and try to increase the profits on those events - Since the company was aquired, the benefit package became slightly less desirable

I worked at ExL Events full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you are right out of college or want to start your career in events, then fine, this is the place to do it. Flexible hours, convenient location for commuters and a pretty independent working environment. You'll learn alot and take ownership of your projects.

    Cons

Though the location is convenient for commuters, its also in an area filled with drug dealers and crack heads. The structure of company left me scratching my head often. Everyone works in their own way, there is no uniform process. Also, the events are cheaply done and I question the actual research that goes into each one. You almost feel like you are working for a "fake" company. Every month someone is quitting...

    Advice to Management

First, work on creating an office culture, there needs to be one to keep your employees happier longer. How about giving everyone a laptop? Going into meetings with loads of printed paper are just impractical. Offer better benefits, it's ironic that a pharma company provides some of the most expensive benifits I've ever had. OR....just let Questex take over everything.

I worked at ExL Events full-time

    Pros

I worked at ExL for several years as a Conference Producer and as with any conference production job (and I've had several), the work is challenging. You have to put in the time and effort to develop conferences into successful and profitable events. ExL provides adequate training, guidance and tools to do this. In contrast with other places where I’ve worked, ExL encourages creativity, innovation and out-of-the-box...

    Cons

There’s significant employee turnover at ExL, especially with younger “millennial” employees, which is frustrating and difficult when you work in a team environment. ExL hires many young, bright and hungry professionals, which makes for a vibrant and energetic working environment. I noticed that many of these millennials arrived expecting to be handed an established and successful event right from the start, without...

    Advice to Management

Management is burdened with the challenges that come with maintaining a successful and rapidly growing company, as well as the transition to a new parent company in 2016. Employees are given the freedom to do their work without constant oversight, as long as milestones and deadlines are being met, which is a management style I prefer. That being said help and advise are always available from management and peers when...

I worked at ExL Events full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A major positive, that actually kept me there longer than I wanted to be was the associate level (lower than Division Head/Managing Director) people. They are all amazing, hardworking and intelligent people who deserve more that they will ever get from this work place.

    Cons

Where to start? Well, the OFFICE BUILDING, the worst location with multiple drug dealers and homeless people standing outside the building at all hours and when you enter the space is tiny (since the company is "growing" you'd think that the upper management, most of which leave before noon, would give up their spacious offices to provide larger conference rooms and more desk space. The WORK, ExL thrives on smoke and...

    Advice to Management

My advice is more to Questex than ExL because I know ExL won't listen. Questex, you need to sit yourself down inside of ExL, you will see that your Division Head of Production is sinking this ship and his superiors are blindly sitting by while he does it. The shady operations will land you at the BBB and their lack of regard for employees could land you in court. The employees there care about their jobs, they care...
