I worked at GUIDESTAR (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly office environment. Would recommend to anyone!

    Cons

A lot of down time- lots of free time

I worked at GUIDESTAR full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Liberal paid leave benefit
    Volunteerism is encouraged
Casual dress - jeans are allowed
Company paid a significant portion of health insurance
Break room has 2 fridges and microwave. Nice for bringing your own lunch

    Cons

Merit raises were sporadic. Compensation not upgraded as knowledge of the nonprofit sector and relational database skills were acquired. A commission component was added to my compensation.
I had several different managers over the last few years. Each manager change resulted in my having to defend the commission component of my compensation.

    Advice to Management

Periodically review positions and upgrade them if the employee has expanded the job significantly beyond the original job description and work.

I have been working at GUIDESTAR full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

GuideStar offers fantastic benefits, including generous insurance plans and plenty of paid leave. I feel the company actually cares about its employees.

    Cons

Being a non-profit, the salaries aren't on par with most for-profit companies. In exchange you have a more laid-back atmosphere and job security. As it's a smaller company there aren't many avenues for furthering your career once you're in.

    I worked at GUIDESTAR full-time

    Pros

Most of the people are great.

    Cons

As someone said when I first started and asked why something was still being done a certain (archaic) way......well, that's just how we've always done it. Ouch

    Advice to Management

Diversify. Not as with a cultural reference, in personality reference. The top management are clones of the same type of person in different skin. In that, there is little opportunity to gather a broad scope of ideas. The employee motto, or whatever it was called, it's not real. Make it real. It stifles true conversation and creates passive-aggressiveness.

I worked at GUIDESTAR full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

GuideStar is full of passionate people, who truly care about the mission of the organization and making the nonprofit world more effective and impactful.

    Cons

The Williamsburg location is a bit outside a major city / metropolitan area - but the Washington DC and San Francisco offices more than make up for that.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Dedication to having a positive impact on the nonprofit sector. Strategic planning and long-term thinking. Intelligent leadership.

    Cons

Limited financial resources create a slow process for technical improvements.

    Pros

Had a great boss who was very understanding of my being a full-time college doing part-time work and was very trusting of my ability to do the work.

    Cons

A lot of busy work as a researcher, but the work is all necessary to keep the quality Philanthropedia's recommendations.
