I worked at Garan (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Good mentor-ship – A place to learn best practices in managing inventory flow. Fairly small team is responsible for driving high volume inventory for a very demanding and powerful customer. In addition, I was provided the opportunity to pick up high level, transferable technical skills.
-Immediate management is straight forward – will tell you the good and the bad as it is. Best constructive criticism you can ask for.
-Benefits – generous Holidays package. In addition, company likes to give unexpected days off between holidays and weekends which feels like a nice fringe bonus.
-Job security and flexibility – unless there is a complete mismatch, you can be sure Garan has a long term spot for you. You're given the opportunity to move across departments within the company.

    Cons

Cultural environment is a bit dry and fairly standard in the corporate landscape, at least on the operational side. Yet to some this may be a pro, but I function better in a hip type of environment that has character outside of just getting the work done.

I have been working at Garan full-time

    Pros

majority of employees stay due to this company gives out good compensation. the only pro i can think of.

    Cons

everyone are competitive; all smiles when you face them but when you turn around, watch out for the knife coming your way. everyone have something to say to everything and everyone's always right(at least in their thinking).

people who work here do not care if you are still in the middle of something. if they come up to you to ask for something, they want you to drop what you are doing and attend to them.

no team work. every member in whichever department you belong points fingers at everyone. nobody takes responsibility.

nobody's perfect. we are all human. if somebody makes a mistake, discuss it and correct it. instead, every people in this company spends an entire day whining about it.

my direct manager is unapproachable, no charisma, not a people person. no life really. this person needs to get laid badly. this person do not want to be ask anything. if you attempt to ask, you will for sure expect a sharp response.

    Advice to Management

its 2017, you need to update to microsoft outlook my goodness! its already hard enough to deal with all the divas working in this place, a little system upgrade would help everyone.

    Pros

-Challenging, creative and changing work load. Usually not very repetitive.
-Great place to start your work life. A lot of learning happens there and people are willing to share their skill sets & experiences.
-Good mentors can guide you to be simply better at what you do.
-Secure, successful and well established business for all parts of Garan operation.

    Cons

-Good partnership with the customer and vendors can lead to lots of surprise and unexpected work. Flexible people enjoy that part where some may not.
    -Daily meetings.

    Advice to Management

For the most part, management is great at listening to all levels of people and giving them straight forward feedback.

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn and grow, great salary, good work life balance for the most part, a lot of good people in the replenishment & planning department to work with and learn from, straight forward criticism, a lot of variety lunch options, opportunity to work with different departments to get the big picture of the business.

    Cons

There are times when you have to stay late or come on the weekend to make a deadline, but those times are few and far inbetween.

    Advice to Management

None, managers at replenishment and planning are fun to work with.

I worked at Garan full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Professional environment with good people to work with. Part of Berkshire Hathaway, Garan makes sound business decisions, and has well-developed resources.

    Cons

Although they try to promote work-life balance, but customer deadlines make that balance not always possible. Can be overwhelming during crunch time - industry competition is intense.

I worked at Garan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Hard working team. Production team works night and day to assure that samples and final product are on time. Pay is very good. Allows for some travel. Fun new projects often. Owned by Berkshire Hathaway. Beautiful office.

    Cons

Management is blind to what goes on daily. Team members are emotionally and sometimes verbally abused, hours can be difficult. Extreme amounts of nepotism, so many people are personal friends or relatives of upper management. Many people with highest paying positions do the least amount, and actually cause problems because of inefficiency and ignorance. Hours are inconsistent, some people are allowed to come in late and leave early and yet others are expected to come in early and stay late regularly. Must pretend to be friends and or cliques to survive.

    Advice to Management

relook at management in general. There are too many people who are abusing their power

I worked at Garan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

pays above industry standard average. steady income & health insurance. large space, accommodating desks. nanoosh is only one block away.

    Cons

upper management creates more problems than assists. employees must to take lunch between 12-2; if an employee questions structure and order, they are told to 'suck it up' from my experience a very rigid frame. THE FLORESCENT LIGHTS ARE SO BRIGHT! blinding, almost.. employees leave at six, not five, womp.

    Advice to Management

take some constructive criticism, especially when it is coming from a person who has nothing to gain by sharing..

I worked at Garan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You learn all aspects of design. Young and extremely welcoming design team and graphic artists. Potential to move up quite fast if you prove you're a good/hard worker.

    Cons

You work non-stop, morning until night, barely ever have time to take a lunch break or even time to eat quickly at your desk. Eating at your desk is not even allowed. Work on weekends frequently, even sometimes on Holiday weekends. If you are [lucky?] enough to travel, its usually last minute trips, which you do not have much of a say in. No travel perks, usually you leave from working a full day, and fly back and have to go straight into work, economy class airfare--even on international trips. Not paid well, lame end of the year bonus. Lots of side projects which do not have to do with design. Lots of shopping and returning at all sorts of stores, and these crazy reports you have to make about your shopping trips. They change your job description without consulting you; people move around a lot. No Summer Fridays. Not to much creativity, lots of knocking-off. Upper management is heavily involved with designing and approvals. Meetings are usually a waste of everyones time. Not much employee appreciation.
