I worked at Health Research full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They provide a cordial, respectful and healthy work environment. I worked at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, one of their division and I found the work environment a wonderful place to work in. HRI staff are very efficient, cordial and treat you well unlike a more recent employer I worked with Leidos. Moreover, their HR and employee benefits are very well managed and when you raise a concern with them (which I did on one occasion), they treat you with concern, give you complete confidentiality and follow up with you till your concern is resolved. A great company to work with.

    Cons

Need more opportunities for career development especially at the lower levels of the ladder. I was a researcher as a postdoc for a number of years and without the proper titles, I found it very difficult to apply for grants and get ahead. had to leave the company to pursue better opportunities.

    Advice to Management

capitalize on the great work environment that you ahve created. Provide more opportunities to employees who are already there rather than trying to bring in new people all the time.

    Pros

Finding a cure for cancer is everyone's goal. Between HRI and RPCI you cannot help but love your job.

    Cons

HRI positions are grant funded. There is no job security. If the grant is no longer funded and you are not "essential" you are let go. The unions cannot protect you and seniority means nothing.

    Advice to Management

    Show some compassion.

    Pros

A rather boring but otherwise ridiculously easy job.

    Cons

The lab that I had the misfortunate of being employed in had members of the highest unprofessional order. They would lie, manipulate, and fight which made for a toxic environment. Never in my life have I have been made to feel so bad for trying to learn. No growth opportunities were possible and the pay was a joke.

    Advice to Management

    Just retire....

    Pros

Good work environment, excellent benefits room for advancement. Never a dull moment in the ever changing dynamic of State and National politics.

    Cons

Grant funded positions, lot's of stress due to State and Federal deadlines. A lot of duplication of efforts because of the nature of State policy.

    Advice to Management

We are all in together so let's move it forward.

    Pros

The pension and benefits are really, really good. You also get a lot of time off and breaks during the day.

    Cons

HRI employees work side-by-side with State of NY health department employees. The atmosphere is very bad. There is no benefit to doing good work (rewards are based only on length of employment), so people are generally unmotivated. A lot of time and money is wasted. Management has no control over disruptive employees, as the union protects employees.

    Advice to Management

Base rewards off actual scientific skill and/or job performance. Hold people accountable for being bad employees.
