Pros

Humane World could be such a wonderful, impactful organization.

Cons

The executive leadership team appears to be highly disconnected, with leaders often prioritizing their own interests over collaboration and the organization's overall mission. I witnessed periods where members of the leadership team would go extended lengths of time without speaking to one another, creating an environment that felt immature and unprofessional. The workplace culture is toxic, with several senior leaders lacking the leadership skills needed to effectively manage and support their teams. There is also a noticeable disconnect between departments. For example, the advancement team frequently highlights tragic situations in fundraising campaigns, while giving little visible recognition to the animal rescue teams that dedicate countless hours to improving the lives of animals. There is little consistency across departments when it comes to policies and expectations. Even basic practices, such as expense policies, are applied unevenly. For example, some teams are required to pay out of pocket for alcohol at work-related events, while others are able to freely expense alcoholic beverages. Advancement opportunities also appear to be inconsistent. Promotions often seem to favor employees who are skilled at navigating internal politics or maintaining the right relationships, rather than those who consistently perform well and excel in their roles. At the same time, employees with ongoing performance or behavioral issues are allowed to remain in their positions for years, despite what many staff perceive to be valid concerns and complaints that are not adequately addressed by Human Resources.
