I worked at Indot (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Excellent work-life balance.
It was rewarding to help stranded motorists.

    Cons

It is a very dangerous job from the hazards of working in high-speed traffic on the Interstate. $840 bi-weekly net pay, with a potential for serious injury, or worse. Expensive health insurance, even for a single person. No overtime at all, unless authorized due to a snowstorm. What else would you expect from the State of Indiana, one of the leaders in LOW wages.SLOW raises, I don't care what they tell you it will take you over 20+ years to make $50K or more base salary. So the next time you hear them bragging about having a balanced budget, you will have a better idea of how they accomplished this. Zero job security your whole work day is monitored by video cameras place along the Interstate, soon to be in the cab of the trucks as well. Once they decide they don't like you, you're out! They will fire you by subjectively labelling you as 'unsafe' and an 'endangerment to the motoring public'.

    Advice to Management

Have some integrity. Not wanting to work on a supervisor's personal vehicle or looking for a job to better provide for family is not a valid reason to go on a witch hunt to fire someone. HR will enter in employees file ineligible to rehire, that gives a negative impression to potential employers. Consider how your actions and the resulting economic impact has on the lives of employees.

    I worked at Indot full-time

    Pros

INDOT was starting to do some great cultural things when I worked there. Not a common thing for a government agency.

    Cons

Pay does not keep up with the private sector.
Benefits are great for non-professionals, but only average for what I've seen professional engineering companies offer...so benefits don't offset the lower pay

    Advice to Management

Keep up the cultural improvements. I'd worked there for 5 years and moral definitely started to improve in the last few years.

I worked at Indot full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

In general, good people to work with. Normal expectations. Good benefits. Most managers are open to good ideas. Need to be aware of local, regional and state issues

    Cons

Tough to move up unless you are part of the right group. Upper management wants 'smooth sailing' rather than doing what is right for the residents. Being part of the wrong party will keep you in the trenches. Upper management is full of retired political hacks. Non engineers are allowed to make engineering decisions

    Advice to Management

Be open to new ideas. Don't continue to make the same mistakes, because that is the way it has always be done. Promote on quality not on gossip buddies.
