I have been working at Kent District Library part-time

    Pros

    No late fees
    Usually friendly staff
    Pay is decent (average)

    Cons

    Major disconnect between branches
Major disconnect between branch staff and upper management
Not a priority to promote internally anymore
Few opportunities to really move up unless you are a loud, active person in the organization who has big ideas and is very loud about them
Management has lofty ideas about how to be the best library system in the world without much thought to how to implement these ideas and how they will affect staff, etc.
Very few benefits for part timers

    Advice to Management

Don't just look for those who are outgoing and loud with their ideas. There are plenty of people who are "career introverts" who can make a difference in the organization just the same. These people deserve recognition as well - they are often those who quietly do the jobs no one else wants to do without looking for awards.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Kent District Library full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I loved working for the Kent District Library Wyoming Branch. I will miss all of my awesome talented co-workers, and the resources that KDL has for its employees. It was a great organization to work for and would recommend it to anyone interested in working in a fast-paced library system.

    Cons

You have to like working in a large fast paced system. This wasn't a con for me, but can be for some.

    Advice to Management

Hire more full-time librarians when the budget starts to get better.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Kent District Library full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of good experiences, connecting with the community, some branches offer good and supportive management, most projects are supported by leadership and are very satisfying.

    Cons

Some of the branches are not as well run, simple mistakes have tough consequences, individual's opinions usually ignored or worse.

    Advice to Management

Make branches more consistent leadership-wise and support staff to make librarianship more of a real profession.

    Pros

Get to help people, work with children, use my creativity.

    Cons

Upper management makes decisions without foresight. NO ACCOUNTABILITY!

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees (and respond).
