Small newsroom with low morale, high turnover because of bad leadership
Pros
Editorial colleagues are incredibly smart and talented. Reporters are deeply invested in their beats. Some editors are extraordinarily helpful and thoughtful. Small newsroom means people get to know each other.
Cons
EIC and CEO are tightly focused on making money, which means editorial is forced to do quotas that are nearly impossible to reach. Those quotas are held as the reason why bonuses and/or professional growth can't be granted to people who work really hard, which means that morale is very low. Lots of lip service on DEI but the DEI Council has literally one POC on it and thinks that putting random seminars once a year achieves equity. EIC has no qualms about throwing reporters under the bus, and doesn't protect reporters, resorting to making lower managers take the hit if stories go awry. The quota system has led to high turnover, with management pushing minorities (POC, LGBTQ+ employees) out.
