I worked at MapLight as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interesting work, impressive amounts of data and sleuths with a keen eye for money in the political system. A great place to develop, learn and think critically that is growing.

    Cons

Being a small nonprofit, opportunities for advancement are limited of course. But this is the case with most any organization with few positions.

  2. "Meaningful mission, room for growth for proactive, ambitious idealist."

I have been working at MapLight full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Very smart, friendly, motivated coworkers

    Cons

    Small nonprofit with limited resources

    Advice to Management

Create clear communication channels for all employees...a more fluid and open.

    Pros

Pros: Great friendly environment and people, regular 9-5 job no over time, only monday thru friday no weekends, they are flexible with your time and theirs, i was able to change my schedule weekly.

    Cons

Cons: Motivation is there but depending on the leader, there's a political environment, also you are expected to help people if they don't ask.

    Advice to Management

Passion and perfection are the basic things that get success. MAPLight.org has the potential. With just a more news coverage, you are going to shine in the field.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

The good stuff: Big plans, big hopes, big dreams. The group is definitely doing "the Lord's work" as they say in information gathering, analysis, and sharing about campaign funding issues and the problems we have inflicted on ourselves in the US. Fairly congenial people trying to work together and make gold out of very little straw. They do pretty much succeed.

    Cons

The bad stuff: Really high expectations of everyone with no reasonable plan to support staff to get there. Very little in the way of continuing education, although in this realm, which changes constantly and is updated (software) every 90 days, it should be mandatory. Easily distracted upper management with a lot of attention to what other somewhat similar (and yet very distinct) groups are doing, with a great deal of "tail wagging the dog." Mission creep is not resisted. Release and launch dates are not firm and held, which makes a lot of projects (and getting good results) really difficult.

    Advice to Management

You may never save the world, but the key is to pay attention to what you are doing, per your mission, and do it well. Pointing out the problem, in this case, is critical and don't forget it.
Work with other allied and simpatico groups for synergy. Don't try to do it all. It's OK.

    Pros

Mission-driven, well-run, smart and friendly co-workers, get to go to work every day helping to improve the U.S.

    Cons

A full plate of ambitious projects always.
