Pros

Incoming staff are engaged and genuinely want to learn about their job and the state retirement system. Incumbent employees are curious and always eager to participate in ongoing development.

Cons

HR (at the Treasurer's office) has no earthly idea how to run a training program and micromanages EVERYTHING.

Pros

The one shining light at the Massachusetts State Retirement Board is the staff. The majority of employees are kind, hardworking, and genuinely committed to the mission of serving retirees. Many colleagues go above and beyond to support one another, fostering a sense of camaraderie despite the challenging work environment. It’s evident that the frontline staff truly care about the people they serve and take pride in their roles.

Cons

Unfortunately, the leadership team creates an overwhelmingly toxic environment. Discriminatory behaviors are prevalent, and rather than addressing these issues, they are perpetuated and protected by those in power. HR, executives, and other leadership members seem more focused on preserving the agency’s image—likely to avoid tarnishing the State Treasurer’s reputation—than on fostering a fair and inclusive workplace. This culture of denial and complicity leaves employees feeling unsupported and powerless to address systemic issues. It also undermines the morale and effectiveness of the agency as a whole. The disparity between the kindness of the staff and the dysfunction of the leadership is stark and disheartening. If you value working with compassionate colleagues, this might be an okay place to start—but be prepared to navigate significant challenges stemming from leadership’s behavior and priorities.
