I worked at Novus full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Vacation and time off schedule
    A lot of great people
    Convenient location

    Cons

No recognition - only hear if something goes wrong
Merit systems is pretty much non-existent
Management can be challenging and hard to work for

    Advice to Management

Start valuing the employee's and recognizing all the great work that they do on a daily basis. They work really hard, but there doesn't seem to be any level of sincere appreciation from management. Nothing is ever good enough.

I worked at Novus full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    PTO and Health benefits

    Cons

Novus is a great place for a college grad who is desperate for a job in-order to pay off student loans. If you love to get treated like crap in a dying industry this is the place for you! Not to mention the awful pay for the amount of work you put it. Unless you know someone who got you the job good luck ever being promoted. Who even buys newspapers these days..? Don't waste your time here unless you're desperate and in dying need of money.

    Advice to Management

Change the way employees are treated or you will soon have no employees at all.

I worked at Novus full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you're good at seeking out and befriending the right people within the company and learning quickly on your feet, you can get far. If you aren't or don't, you will work twice as hard and may not see a promotion, a raise, or recognition for years. Over my time with Novus I saw things go both ways for different colleagues. PTO, work from home options, and the holiday schedule set Novus apart (I don't know of many other ad agencies that shut down for a week and a half over Xmas and NYE), flexible work schedule.

    Cons

Cliquey management across departments, insufficient communication across departments, insufficient salary, consistent company-wide hiring or salary freezes that cause existing employees to work ridiculously hard for no reward and with no relief in sight, promised raises or promotions that never come to fruition, slow moving merit increase process (yearly reviews occur in March and when raises are being considered, they may not take effect until end of year)

    Advice to Management

Get your act together with merit increases! Hire appropriately so that your brightest stars don't burn out. Recognize stand-out performance and call out employees who refuse to pull their weight- even senior level employees should be held accountable. Continue with the standardization of client services across accounts; it's going to make things easier for everybody once it's complete.

I worked at Novus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people at Novus are generally wonderful to work with. There's a strong sense of camaraderie and a genuine respect for work-life balance. People want you to be succeed. The benefits are good (though salary could be better) and there is a lot of PTO.

    Cons

Novus Media's business model is currently too reliant on the declining field of print advertising. Though efforts are finally being made to expand digital and move into out-of-home advertising, this shift is slow and might not be enough to save Novus (although I hope it is). Novus seems to be going downhill, which strains employee morale. Managers who fail to promote from within also strain morale and will lose valuable employees.

    Advice to Management

Print can only sustain Novus for a little while longer. There needs to be a heightened sense of urgency regarding this reality. The top priority should be smartly and quickly expanding Novus Media's capabilities into OOH/other channels. Otherwise, employees will continue to jump off the sinking ship.

Continue hiring nice, smart, drama-free people, and hire from within. Continue your commitment to work-life balance, and give more timely raises. Pay attention to turnover - you need to retain your best employees to keep Novus afloat.

I worked at Novus full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The PTO & benefits are good, but not even close to worth it.

    Cons

I know what you're thinking. All these bad reviews must be just whiny millennials, right? They are not. I worked with many extremely smart and talented people at Novus, most of which have since moved on to better things. This place is where careers go to die. Unless you plan on growing in the budding print media industry, your experience will be useless when you inevitably try to leave. Please save yourself the trauma and move on to the next one. I have never witnessed as much turnover as I did at Novus. The salary is pathetic and even though they will tell you in every all company meeting that “raises are coming, we just have to straighten it out with the top brass” It’s not going to happen. The workload is extraordinarily high for some teams, and very low for others. If you're friends with a manager, you may have a tiny chance of a promotion. If not, there is no chance. Please trust the reviews. Run, don’t walk away from this place, and never look back.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at what you're doing now, and do the exact opposite.

I worked at Novus (More than a year)

    Pros

    Paid time off is abundant.

    Cons

No accountability. Salaries are disproportionate amongst identical or similar jobs, depending on when you were hired and who hired you. There is no accountability--a couple employees carry the workload of the department while others come and go as they please and contribute nothing. Management looks the other way!

    Advice to Management

Wake up and get to the root cause of why you have 200% turnover within a department in eighteen months!

    Pros

Experience working with well known clients
    Fun team environment
    Decent work/life balance

    Cons

Very specific business structure that can limit your growth opportunities
Not the place to go if you're looking to learn more of the creative aspects of media
The commute can be a bit long

    Advice to Management

When people succeed in their role, reward them with more opportunities to try the things they want to.
